Fuenmayor, Barry Lead Men’s Golf To Tie For Third In Eugene

Mar 22, 2022

EUGENE, Ore. – Mateo Fuenmayor shot a 3-under 68 on the final day of the Duck Invitational to help the Oregon State men's golf team to a tie for third Tuesday at the par-71 Eugene Country Club.

Fuenmayor produced one of the Beavers' three eagles over the two days, on the par-5 16th hole, to highlight his final found. He had also eagled the par-4 9th hole in the second round of action.

He improved by nine strokes over his first round 6-over 77 and ended the tournament tied with teammate Carson Barry for sixth place at 1-over 214. The top-10 finish is the first of his career.

Barry shot at par on Tuesday, a day after finishing with a 2-under 69. He led OSU's contingent with 11 birdies over the three days, which was among the tournament's leaders. The tie for sixth marks his second top-10 finish of the year and ninth of his career.

The two highlighted the Beavers' team mark, which saw OSU shoot at par on Tuesday. Oregon State and Washington (3-under par) were the only two teams to finish at par or better on Tuesday, and that finish enabled the Beavers to jump up three spots from a tie for sixth after the first two rounds.

"I'm really proud of our guys for continually plugging along and battling to the end," Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. "This course is really difficult. It tests all aspects of your game and during round one, it didn't seem like we did anything horrible, it was more just death by a thousand paper cuts and nothing really went our way.

"It was a strong performance by Mateo and Carson this week. It was fun to see their continued strong play from the last couple of events. Both of them possess elite-level ball striking and this course will reward the individuals who play well from tee to green."

Nolan Thoroughgood and Brandon Eyre but finished in a tie for 23rd. Thoroughgood, who played as an individual in Eugene, was consistent throughout, finishing with a 6-over 219 over the two days. He shot a 3-over 74 in round one, 1-over 72 in round two and completed the event with a 2-over 73. Thoroughgood finishdd with one of the just 17 eagles over the two days, doing so on the par-4 17 Tuesday.

Eyre dropped down to par on Tuesday after entering the final round tied for 39th at 6-over. He and Thoroughgood both finished with seven birdies, as did Jackson Lake. Eyre tallied four of his seven birdies on Tuesday, including on the 16th (par 5), 17th (par 4) and 18th (par 4) holes.

Carson Enright, playing in his first tournament since early February in Hawai'i, ended the Duck Invitational with a 10-over 223, finishing in a tie for 35th. He posted a 2-over 73 on Tuesday, recording an eagle on the par-5 6th hole in addition to two birdies.

Lake improved by three strokes over his initial 5-over, posting a 2-over 73 on his final day of play. He ended the tournament at 11-over 224, placing in a tie for 45th. Brody Marconi, also playing as an individual, finished in a tie for 88th at 29-over.
