Golf Places Four in Top-10, Finishes Second at Duck Invitational

Eugene, Ore.- The Utah Men's Golf team had their strongest performance of the season at the Duck Invitational. The Utes shot 2-under (850) to place second out of a 14-team field and four Utes finished inside the top-10. As a team, they earned a spot in the top-two for the second time this season.

Utah came off the tees hot, finishing round one in second with a score of 2-over (286). After a short break the Utes came back even stronger in round two, shooting 14-under (270). 270 was the lowest round recorded at the event and helped the Utes increase the gap between them and the third ranked Arizona State Sun Devils to 22 strokes. 270 is also the third lowest 18-hole team score on record at Utah. On the second and final day of play the team would shoot 10-over (294) to solidify their second-place finish.

Senior Blake Tomlinson finished in a team high fourth-place after shooting 2-under (211). Tomlinson shot just 1-under (70) in the first round before shooting a blistering 6-under (65) to climb the leaderboard to second after one day of play. He would shoot 5-over (76) in round three to finish in the top five.

Sophomore Javier Barcos added another strong tournament performance to his resume shooting 1-over (214) to place himself in a tie for sixth. Barcos, like Tomlinson, had a strong round two and climbed the leader board seven spots to fourth after also shooting 6-under (65). The sophomore form Spain shot 6-over (77) in round three to secure his place in the top-eight.

True freshmen Braxton Watts and senior Tristan Mandur both tied for ninth after shooting 2-over (215). Watts and Mandur both tied for 11th after the first round with Watts excelling in round two climbing the leaderboard six spots shooting 2-under (69). Mandur stayed constant and remained in 11th after round two and would shoot 1-over (72) to climb two spots for the T-9. 

Redshirt freshmen Martín León rounded out the team tying for 35th after having a strong final round in which he climbed the leaderboard 25 spots shooting 1-over (72) giving him a tournament score of 10-over (223). True freshmen Zack Neff competed as an individual shooting 22-over (235).

"We played really well this week," said head coach Garrett Clegg. "We had a tough day today, but a great event and I don't think I have ever had four players in the top-ten individually without winning the tournament. the boys played great, and we beat the number three team in the country by almost 19 shots. I'm proud of the boys and excited about what this can mean for the weeks ahead."

The Utes will get some much-earned rest time before heading south to compete in the ASU Thunderbird Invitational. The two-day tournament will be held April 15-16 and will the team's final regular season event before postseason play begins.
