Freshman Ryan Colby Lifts No. 15 USC Men’s Tennis To 4-3 Win Over No. 13 Stanford

Mar 25, 2022

LOS ANGELES — The No. 15 USC men's tennis team gutted out a gritty 4-3 win over visiting No. 13 Stanford in a rubber match at Marks Stadium, with freshman Ryan Colby collecting the clincher to net a Pac-12 win for the Trojans. USC had snagged a tight doubles point before moving into a tight singles scene that saw Stanford draw even three times to set up Colby's heroics on court four. The win improves USC to 12-5 overall and to 2-1 in Pac-12 play. The Trojans and Cardinal had split earlier matches this season by 4-1 scorelines before USC broke the season tie with today's victory.

After USC's Peter Makk and Lodewijk Weststrate captured a 6-4 win on court two over Kopczynski/Sah, the doubles point hung in the balance with two tiebreakers. At the No. 3 spot, Stanford's Basing/Rotsaert found a late gear to claim a 7-6 (1) win over USC's Ryder Jackson and Samuel Rubell to even things  up and put all eyes on court one. An all-out battle was underway in that breaker, which tied up five times before USC's #17 Stefan Dostanic and Bradley Frye maneuvered ahead to tack up a 7-6 (9) victory over #51 Fery/Geller and get a 1-0 USC advantage on the board.

Stanford scored a point when Timothy Sah snagged a 6-1, 6-4 win over USC's Paul Barretto on court six, only to see #6 Stefan Dostanic strike right back with a smooth 6-3, 6-4 upset of Stanford's #2 Arthur Fery on court one to sneak the Trojans ahead 2-1. The win marked Dostanic's 13th consecutive singles win. Again, the Cardinal tugged things even, this time netting a 7-6 (5), 6-1 win from #58 Max Basing on court three over USC's #46 Peter Makk.

Next, it was #73 Lodewijk Weststrate who got the Trojans a boost out in front. He churned out a 7-5, 6-4 win over Sangeet Sridhar on court five to nudge USC into position with a 3-2 advantage. Stanford bit back on a three-set win from Axel Geller over #116 Bradley Frye at the No. 2 spot to snarl things up 3-3 and put the pressure on court four. There, it was a freshman-senior bout between USC's newcomer Ryan Colby and Stanford's veteran Alexandre Rotsaert. In order to avert a third set, Colby needed to claim a second tiebreaker against his Cardinal foe. He'd do so with a gutsy effort, pulling off the clincher with his 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5) decision to notch a hard-fought 4-3 win for his Trojans.

USC has another Pac-12 clash coming up tomorrow (March 26) in a 1 p.m. matchup against California at Marks Stadium.
