Doyle Fires a 63 as Ducks Finish in Top Five

Mar 26, 2022

STANFORD, Calif. – Birdie. Ace. Birdie. Birdie. Par Birdie.

That was what the six middle holes looked like for freshman Eric Doyle Saturday at The Goodwin as he shot a 7-under 63 to help the Ducks earn their fifth top-five finish the last six events.

Standing 18th after the first round, Oregon moved up to 10th Friday and then climbed another five spots to finish fifth at 12-under 828 following Saturday's final round.

Doyle's score was an Oregon freshman record and was one off the school record of 62 shared by four players, most recently by Tom Gueant at the 2021 Goodwin.

"Eric was amazing today," said head coach Casey Martin. "It was one of the best rounds I've witnessed in a while. So pumped for him."

The highlight of Doyle's round was a hole-in-one on the 196-yard, par three 17th hole. He also had seven birdies on Saturday.

Doyle jumped 24 places on the final day to finish fifth overall at 9-under 201.

How it Happened: Oregon also got a strong performance from Greg Solhaug who followed up a 66 in the second round with a 3-under 67 on Saturday. Solhaug, who had five birdies in the final round, tied for 35th overall at 1-under 209.

The Ducks also counted 1-over 71s from Nate Stember and Jose Islas in the final round. Islas also tied for 35th at 209.

Notable: Oregon's 8-under in the final round was the second-best round of the day, behind only No. 9 Washington, which won the tournament following a 10-under on Saturday. Doyle's fifth-place finish was a career best.

Quotable:
Head coach Casey Martin
"We really battled back from a tough first day to finish strong the last two days."
