Ducks Enter Final Round Tied For Second
PHOENIX – The Oregon women's golf team will enter the final round of the PING/ASU Inviational in a tie for second place after carding a second consecutive 2-under 286 in Saturday's second round at Papago Golf Course.
The No. 2 Ducks are tied with No. 19 Baylor for second at 4-under par, 17 strokes behind No. 8 Arizona State, which is hosting the tournament on its home course. Oregon and Baylor are two strokes up on No. 1 Stanford, which sits in fourth at 2-under par.
UO was led on Saturday by junior Sofie Kibsgaard Nielsen, who made four birdies and just one bogey for an impressive 3-under 69.
"Another pretty solid round for our group today," head coach Derek Radley said. "We're putting ourselves in good spots and minimizing mistakes, and hopefully tomorrow we can see a few more birdies drop. I'm really proud of the round Sofie put together. She's been rock solid for us this spring and she really played some good golf out there today."
How it Happened: Nielsen was even through her first eight holes before closing the front nine with a birdie to get to 1 under. She immediately got to 2 under with a birdie at No. 10, and added another at No. 15 as part of a bogey-free back nine. The junior carded her second sub-70 round of the spring and is tied for 15th place overall at 1-under par entering Sunday.
Fellow junior Briana Chacon is the top Duck on the individual leaderboard in a tie for seventh, recording an even-par 72 in round two after opening with a 69 on Friday. Chacon is in a three-way tie for seventh, five strokes back of individual leader Ashley Menne (Arizona State) at 8-under par.
Hsin-Yu (Cynthia) Lu matched Chacon with an even-par 72, and both Tze-Han (Heather) Lin and Ching-Tzu Chen came in with a 1-over 73 to round out the counting scores. Lu and Lin are both tied for 18th individually at even par overall, giving Oregon four players in the top 20 on the leaderboard.
