Morales and Simpson Homers Not Enough As Huskies Fall To Sun Devils 5-3
Huskies stepped into Phoenix Municipal Stadium today ready to right the ship following a loss in the series opener. RHP Calvin Kirchoff started strong on the mound. A five-pitch first inning set the tone for what would be just a handful of Arizona State runs during the game, but could the Husky offense keep pace? Let's find out.
Top of 2
Coby Morales led off the inning with a single up the middle. AJ Guerrero followed with a laser into the right field corner for a double. ASU pitchers wanted nothing to do with Michael Snyder following his two-homerun day yesterday, so they kindly plunked him in the hip and welcomed him over to first base. With the bases loaded Cam Clayton made solid contact to the left side, but the shortstop was able to field it and fire to third for an out. Morales scored on the play however, putting the Dawgs up 1-0.
Bottom of 2
The lead didn't last long as the leadoff batter homered over the left field fence tying things up at one-a-piece.
Bottom of 3
Kirchoff sat the first batter down on strikes. Two singles followed however. Another strikeout showed promise, but a third single in the inning plated another run for the Sun Devils putting them up 2-1.
Top of 4
Coby Morales stepped to the plate with one out and worked the count to 1-1. With a quick adjustment of his helmet, he squared up the pitch and drove it deep to center field. The center fielder tracked it to the wall around 390 feet away, jumped, and felt the ball bounce out of his mitt over the fence. He pounded the wall in frustration as Morales made his way around the bases with the score now tied 2-2.
Bottom of 5
Back at the top of the order once again, Kirchoff got a quick out as the leadoff batter popped out to Simpson at first on the first pitch of the inning. The next ASU batter made up for it though tripling to right field. The next batter would put ASU up 3-2 with a sacrifice fly to left field. RHP Josh Emanuels took over for Kirchoff on the mound and sat the next batter down on strikes.
Bottom of 7
Following a leadoff walk, RHP Stefan Raeth took over for Emanuels. A single to the next batter however, would have runners on first and second. A much needed first out came on a fly out to right field but the runner on second advanced. A sacrifice fly to center came next making it a 4-2 ballgame.
Bottom of 8
Raeth snagged a quick out as the first batter fouled out to Snyder at third. A full count walk to the next batter however, had Coach Cribby calling for lefty Stu Flesland III. It took him a moment to settle in however, as a wild pitch advanced the runner into scoring position where he would soon score on a double to center field giving ASU a 5-2 lead.
Top of 9
With their work cut out for them, Simpson got things started in a big way with a homerun down the right field line. The Huskies would put the bat on the ball three more times, but were unable to find any holes and, unfortunately, went down in order from there.
Starter Calvin Kirchoff took the loss moving to 2-1 on the season. He went 4.2 innings pitched giving up 3 earned runs on 5 hits with 2 walks and 2 strikeouts.
Huskies will look to grab a win tomorrow in Game Three of the series at 12 PM PST.
