USC Baseball Grinds Out 6-5 Win to Even Series at Oregon
EUGENE, Ore. – The USC baseball team clawed its way back to even the series on the road at Oregon, winning 6-5 in a hotly contested matchup on Saturday afternoon.
The Trojans improve to 14-7 overall and 4-4 in Pac-12 play with the win, while Oregon falls to 15-7, 6-2. USC's victory snaps a five-game winning streak for the Ducks.
The teams traded the lead five times in the game, with USC scoring the game-winning run on a base-loaded hit-by-pitch in the eighth. It was the second time in the game USC took the lead thanks to a hit-by-pitch.
Oregon led 1-0 early, but a sacrifice fly in the fourth and then a two-run homer by Tyler Lozano put USC ahead 3-1. The Ducks would respond with a three-run homer in the bottom of the fourth to take the advantage right back.
The Trojans again jumped in front in the sixth inning, when Adrian Colon-Rosado hit a solo-homer and Rhylan Thomas later drew one of the aforementioned bases-loaded hit-by-pitches. Oregon again had an answer in the bottom half of the inning, getting a game-tying RBI double from Colby Shade.
Trevor Halsema opened the eighth inning with a walk, followed by a bunt single from Nick Lopez and then a walk by Carson Wells to load the bases. Oregon got an out at home on a squeeze attempt by the Trojans, but D'Andre Smith was the next batter and took a pitch off the back to bring home the winning run.
USC reliever Carson Lambert entered the game with a pair of runners on in the sixth and after allowing an inherited runner to score, he settled in and would retire the next four batters, also working a scoreless seventh. Matt Keating took over on the mound with a runner on in the eighth, striking out two batters to end the inning and strand the tying run on second. An error allowed an Oregon runner to reach with two outs in the ninth, but Keating got a groundout to end the game and earn the save.
