Bears Finish San Diego Crew Classic Strong

Mar 27, 2022

SAN DIEGO – The Cal women's rowing team wrapped up its weekend at the San Diego Crew Classic with a strong showing on the water at Mission Bay in San Diego. The Bears had four boats competing in their respective finals and all four boats finished in the top three.

Sunday's conditions were ideal for fast times and that was what the spectators saw. The Bears opened the morning's racing with a second-place finish at the Jessop-Whitter Cup Invitational. The V8+ boat finished just behind Texas with a time of 6:32.80 – besting their time from the previous day.

"Across the board, we feel good about the racing this weekend," said head coach Al Acosta. "The team did well against some very fast competition. For a number of our rowers, it was their first collegiate race and for a few of the older ones, it was good to see them back on the racecourse after two years away. We're looking forward to getting back at with the full team on Tuesday."

The varsity four boat was next up for the Bears in the Karen Plumleigh Cortney Cup. Cal finished third in a tight race behind Texas and USC, crossing the finish line with a time of 7:39.90.

Like the V8+ race, the 2V8 boat finished second to Texas in the Jackie Ann Stitt Hungness Trophy. Cal finished with a time of 6:45.24 – three seconds behind Texas and four seconds ahead of Pac-12 rival Washington who finished third.

Cal's 3V8+ boat wrapped up the weekend's racing finishing second in the Carley Copley Cup. The Bears finished with a time of 6:55.07. Texas was once again the winner, with Washington finishing behind the Bears.

Cal will return to the water on Saturday, April 2 for a race against Stanford at Redwood Shores.
