Cal Splits Sunday Doubleheader

TUCSON, ARIZONA No. 11 California beach volleyball split a Sunday doubleheader at the Pac-12 South Invitational. The Bears dropped the opening match to Washington, 3-2, before rebounding with a win over Oregon, 5-0.

A shorthanded Cal team, missing top pair staple Mima Mirkovic, fell to Washington to open Sunday's action at the Pac-12 South Invitational.  Washington is led by Derek Olson, who spent the past four seasons working at Cal.  
The Bears put together a new pair on court five as Ella Dreibholz and Kate Bierly were matched together. The duo dominated from the outset as they won 21-12 in the first set and followed that with an identical 21-12 score in the second set to take the first point of the match.
On court three, Buchner and Delgado won the first set 21-16. In the second set, Washington took a 20-18 lead, but the Bears ended the match by scoring four straight to win the set 22-20 and claim the point.
Washington won on court one as Natalie Robinson and Chloe Loreen won in straight sets over the newly formed pair of Ana Costa and Ainsley Radell, 21-16, 21-19.
On court four, Washington won the first set 21-14. However, the Cal duo of Maya Gessner and Natalie Martin fought back in the second set as the score was tied at 23. However, Washington got an ace on a shot that hit the tape and followed with a shot to the corner to take the match.
On court two, Ella Sears and Ava Mann were playing together for the first time for the Bears. They started strongly as they won 21-11 in the first set. Cal's Ava Mann and Ella Sears won the first set 21-11, but dropped close encounters in the second set, 21-19, and the third set, 15-13.

The Bears responded to the defeat against Washington by coming back and sweeping Oregon. Cal won their 10th consecutive match over the Ducks and finished their weekend with a win.
Cal picked up the first point of the day on court five. The duo of Bierly and Alex Young-Gomez rolled to a straight-set win as they picked up 21-12 wins in both sets.
Delgado and Buchner picked up their third win of the weekend as they claimed a straight set win. The only Cal pair that played together in all four matches this weekend, the duo has played at court three in every match and that continuity paid off with a 21-17, 21-12 win.
On court four, Dreibholz and Gessner were paired together for the first time this year. The duo excelled against Oregon as they won 21-17, 21-15 to secure the match.
Playing on court one instead of their traditional spot on court two, Mann and Radell fell behind early as they trailed 17-11 in the first set. However, they responded with a 6-3 run which saw them trail 20-17. However, the Bears scored four straight points, fighting off multiple set points and won the first set, 23-21. Oregon won the second set, 21-14. However, Cal jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the third set and held off the Ducks to win 15-13.
Costa and Sears played together on court two and the duo picked up the first set win by a 21-18 advantage. Oregon responded with a 21-16 win in the second set to force a decisive third set. Cal jumped out to an early lead and Costa put the match away as she went over on two with a decisive shot to win 15-11.

The Bears will return to Berkeley for their lone homestand of the season as the Bears will host three teams in two days at the Clark Kerr Sand Courts. The Bears will honor their seniors in a ceremony prior to the final match of the weekend. Cal will host Long Beach State on Friday at 2:30 p.m. PT followed by matches against San Francisco and UC Davis at 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.
