Alekna Wins Second Straight Pac-12 Honor
BERKELEY – California track & field freshman Mykolas Alekna has won his second straight Pac-12 Men's Field Athlete of the Week, as announced by the conference on Tuesday morning, after his tremendous performance at last Saturday's Aztec Invitational. That day, Alekna set the World U20 record in the discus throw with a tremendous heave of 66.70m (218-10), which currently leads the NCAA.
"Mykolas had a very strong training week leading to our trip to San Diego," said assistant coach Mohamad Saatara, who coaches the throws group. "He did an absolutely fantastic job performing at the highest levels."
In addition to the World U20 Record, Alekna's mark also broke the Lithuanian U23 Record, the Cal school record, the NCAA Freshman Record, the Aztrack Sports Deck Facility Record and the Aztec Invitational Meet Record. He stands at No. 3 all-time in the NCAA, as well as at No. 3 in the world in 2022.
Last week, he won both the Pac-12 Men's Field Athlete of the Week award and the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Men's Athlete of the Week award for his then-NCAA-leading discus throw of 62.63m (205-6).
Alekna and the Bears will be back in action on Friday, April 1, to kick off the two-day Stanford Invitational at Stanford's Cobb Track and Angell Field.
