Cal Falls To Saint Mary’s Tuesday Night

Mar 29, 2022
Connor Sullivan struck out four across three scoreless innings of relief in Cal's loss to Saint Mary's on Tuesday night.

BERKELEY – California surrendered an early lead and dropped a midweek contest to Saint Mary's, 10-5, on Tuesday night at Stu Gordon Stadium. Cal led 5-2 through four innings played before the Gaels scored eight unanswered runs en route to the non-conference win.

Saint Mary's (15-10) scored three to tie it in a five-hit fifth inning and took the lead on a Chris Campos RBI single to left field the following frame. A grand slam by Christian Almanza two at bats later extended the Gaels' lead to 10-5, which they would hold.

Connor Sullivan struck out four batters and held Saint Mary's scoreless over the final three innings. He was one of nine pitchers used by the Golden Bears (11-13), who lost their second straight game and fourth in their last five.

Cal scored in each of the first four innings to jump out to its 5-2 lead. Caleb Lomavita opened the scoring in the first with a double in the right-center gap that scored Hance Smith from first base, and Cole Elvis later scored on a wild pitch in the same frame. Lomavita's second RBI of the game brought home Dom Souto in the second before Smith and Keshawn Ogans recorded a sacrifice fly apiece in the third and fourth innings.

The Bears managed just one hit in the final five innings and were 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position.

Smith, Souto and Nathan Manning tallied two hits apiece.

The two East Bay foes will clash again in two weeks on Monday, April 11 in Moraga.
