No. 12 Cal Falls 4-3 At No. 30 ASU

Apr 1, 2022
Jessica Alsola won in doubles and singles against the Sun Devils.

TEMPE, Ariz. – Twelfth-ranked California women's tennis suffered its first loss in Pac-12 play, as the Golden Bears fell to No. 30 Arizona State, 4-3, on a hot Friday afternoon at the Whiteman Tennis Center. The Sun Devils clinched their win when Cali Jankowski defeated Cal's Valentina Ivanov, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4, at court four singles.

Cal – which also had a five-match winning streak snapped Friday – is now 4-1 in the Pac-12 and 11-6 overall. ASU has a record of 10-6 (2-4 Pac-12).

The Bears continued their strong play in doubles. They started off with a win on court three, with Erin Richardson and Julia Rosenqvist beating Jankowski and Marianna Argyrokastriti, 6-1. Cal clinched the point when the 29th-ranked Wiersholm and Jessica Alsola knocked off Sedona Gallagher and Giulia Morlet, 6-4, on court two.

In singles, despite an early loss on court six – Makenna Thiel fell to Marianna Argyrokastriti, 6-1, 6-1 – Cal built a 3-1 lead. The 122nd-ranked Wiersholm earned Cal's first singles win, beating Gallagher, 6-4, 6-4, followed by the 62nd-ranked Jessica Alsola beating Domenika Turkovic, 7-6, 6-3, to give the Bears their 3-1 advantage.

But Cal losses on courts five and one knotted the match at 3-3, leaving court four to decide things.

"It's our first road match in quite some time, and Arizona State is a good team," Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. "I was happy with doubles. Credit to them after losing the doubles point to compete very hard on their home courts. We had some opportunities. We're definitely better acclimated to these conditions now. Hopefully tomorrow we'll be ready to go again in singles."

Cal next plays at No. 48 Arizona on Saturday at 12 p.m. in Tucson.
