Women's Tennis Drops a Heartbreaker to No. 36 Oregon

SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah Women's tennis team dropped a heartbreaker at the George S. Eccles Tennis Center on Friday afternoon. Utah was defeated by #36 Oregon, 4-3. 
 
"We came out of the gates well in setting the tone with the doubles point," remarked head coach Ric Mortera. "It was tough to lose the singles matches in the fashion we did. I commend the team for putting themselves in winning situations, but we need to execute down the stretch a little better in order to finish off these solid teams. We will continue to work and look forward to getting out and competing again."
 
Finishing first in doubles, Emily Dush and Madeline Lamoreaux were defeated by Myah Petchey and Allison Mulville, 6-3. Needing to win both matches, Linda Huang and Madison Tattini were able to best their Oregon opponents, Sophie Luescher and Uxia Martinez Moral, 6-4, tying the doubles matches at 1-1. 
 
It would come down to the No. 3 doubles teams. In a tough match, Lindsay Hung and Anastasia Goncharova traded games with Ducks, Ares Teixido Garcia, and Karin Young until they were able to tie up the game, 5-5. The Utes were able to clinch the match, 7-5, and the doubles point for the team. 
 
Moving to singles, Hung finished first, defeating her opponent, Ares Teixido Garcia, 6-3, 6-1, and putting the Utes ahead 2-0. 
 
Tattini lost to the Ducks, Uxia Martinez Moral, 2-6,3-6. Following closely after, Dush was defeated by Myah Petchey, 4-6, 2-6, evening the match at 2-2. 
 
On court 6, Anya Lamoreaux battled out against Oregon's Allison Mulville. A. Lamoreaux came up with a first set victory, 6-2. She followed it up with a 6-3, set two win to clinch the match, and put the Utes ahead, 3-2. 
 
In a tough match, Huang fell to Sophie Luescher, 6-7(6), 3-6, allowing the Ducks to tie up the match 3-3. 
 
In the last match of the day, Goncharova went head to head with Oregon's Karin Young. Goncharova took the first match 6-4. They were in a battle in the second, but Goncharova fell short, falling 4-6, tying the match at 1-1 and forcing a third set. Goncharova fell short in the third set and was defeated 6-4, 4-6, 4-6.

Utah returns to the courts on Friday, April 8, when they host the University of Arizona in Pac-12 play. The match starts at 1:30 p.m. MT at the George S. Eccles Tennis Center.
