STANFORD – At the end of Day 1 of the Stanford Invitational, California track & field left Cobb Track and Angell Field with 7 new program top 10 marks and 15 personal records, in addition to facility and meet records set by senior Camryn Rogers in the hammer throw.
Rogers' mark of 74.18m (243-4) was good enough to win the event by a margin of 21 feet, instantly placing her atop the NCAA's season-best list and third in the world after the first throw of her 2022 outdoor campaign. Cal also fielded the second-place winner in the women's hammer throw, as junior Anna Purchase added onto her PR with a toss of 67.77m (222-4) to take further control of Cal's second-best mark all-time.
Senior Ezinne Abba continued her own winning ways in the 100m dash, racing to a time of 11.33 in the prelims and 11.35 in the final to clinch the title for Cal. Close behind her was classmate Maisie Stevens, whose 11.43 in the preliminaries (followed by a 11.52 in the final) was good enough to push her up to fifth in program history. In the men's 1500m invite, sophomore Garrett MacQuiddy blazed to a time of 3:41.62, seventh-fastest in Cal history and the fastest collegiate runner in the field as he finished just 0.54 behind Olympian Ryoma Aoki.
Amari Turner starred once again in the women's pole vault, shattering her personal best to reach a new top height of 4.05m (13-3.5), good for fifth at Cal all-time. Meanwhile, Krissy Smoot placed second in the women's shot put, reaching a distance of 15.47m (50-9.25) to move up to sixth in Cal history; on the track, Jada Hicks claimed a second-place title of her own in the 100m hurdles, good for seventh-fastest in program history with a time of 13.63. Finally, Erin Archibeck made her Cal 5000m debut, racing to the ninth-fastest time in program history with a finish of 16:08.05.
MacQuiddy was not the only Cal man to earn a top finish, as Hakim McMorris leapt 7.58m (24-10.5) for second place and a PR in his 2022 long jump debut, Di'Niko Bates (14.22) took third in the 110m hurdles, Will Sornberger (52.83) finished third in the 400m hurdles and Jake Porter placed third in the discus throw with a personal-best heave of 47.06m (154-4).
