Bears Split Saturday Morning Races
Redwood City, CA – The Cal women's rowing team earned a split on Saturday in a pair of duel races against Stanford and UC Irvine at Redwood Shores. The Bears' third varsity eight boat finished just behind host Stanford in the opening race of the day. Shortly after, the fourth varsity eight boat soundly defeated UC Irvine in the final race of the day.
"Today was a great step towards Pac-12s," said assistant coach Maggie Cheek. "The squad did a great job at showing up, racing hard, and representing the entire team. "They are eager to race and any day we get to line up next to another crew makes for a great day. We are excited by our progress and motivated to get back to practice on Monday."
Saturday's race began with the 3V8+ boat taking on Stanford in a head-to-head race. The Bears finished second behind the Cardinal with a time of 6:47.64. Stanford finished the race with a time of 6:43.0.
Not long after, the 4V8+ soundly defeated UC Irvine, finishing with a time of 7:04.27. The Anteaters crossed the finish line with a time of 7:33.07.
"Race days are always exciting in blue and gold, and today was an epic developmental step toward achieving our goals," said junior Carly Wright. "This team has a lot of fire and loves to race, so I have no doubt that today is only adding to that. Taking home a win and a loss will keep us competitive and motivated for the rest of the season. Go Bears!"
Cal will return to the water next Saturday for the Las Vegas Invitational.
