Beavers Blank Cal 8-0 to Clinch Pac-12 Weekend Series
BERKELEY, Calif. – Senior standout Mariah Mazon tossed her 11th win of the season inside the circle for Oregon State in No. 23 Oregon State's 8-0 blanking at California Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Beavers clinched the Pac-12 series with the Golden Bears.
The Beavers (28-8, 4-4 Pac-12) shutout the Golden Bears (21-14, 3-5 Pac-12) and have now allowed just two runs in six games, outscoring their opponents 28-2. Six different Beavers totaled for 11 hits on the day, led by three in four at-bats from freshman Kiki Escobar.
Mazon struck out four and moved her ERA to 0.80.
Grace Messmer put OSU on the board in the first inning with her third double of the season, plating Eliana Gottlieb.
An RBI single and a fielder's choice in the fourth inning scored two Beavers' runs in Madison Simon and Jade Soto. Savanah Whatley's single was her first RBI of her Beaver career.
The Beavers blew the game open a five-run sixth inning off five hits and a Golden Bear miscue. Whatley and Frankie Hammoude added RBI hits while Des Rivera roped a three RBI double to left center to wrap up the scoring.
Freshman Sarah Haendiges came in for relief in the final frame to help seal the victory with a strikeout.
The Beavers go for their first season sweep of the season on Sunday at 12 p.m. PT. The contest will be available on Cal's live stream.
