No. 23 Oregon State Wins 1-0 Pitchers' Duel to Sweep Cal

Apr 3, 2022

BERKELEY, Calif. – In Sunday's pitchers duel at Cal, the No. 23-ranked Oregon State softball team earned the series sweep over the Golden Bears with a 1-0 victory. Freshman Sarah Haendiges tossed a complete game of five-hit ball and struck out six.
The Beavers (29-8, 5-4 Pac-12) shutout the Golden Bears (21-15, 3-6 Pac-12) and have now allowed just two runs in seven games, outscoring their opponents 29-2. The series sweep over Cal is the first of the season for OSU and its second series win. Kiki Escobar and Grace Messmer continued their hitting streaks, picking up the lone hits of the day for the Orange & Black.

Haendiges moved her ERA to 1.79 and is now 9-2 this season.

Messmer put OSU on the board in the first inning for the second consecutive game with an RBI single up the middle, driving in Escobar who reached on a leadoff walk.
After giving up a leadoff double in the third frame, Haendiges retired the side from there to end the Cal threat.

The Golden Bears threatened once again in the bottom sixth frame, breaking through on a leadoff single but a pair of infield pop ups and a ground out ended the inning.

From there, the Beaver defense did the work as OSU has won its last four.

Oregon State is set to host No. 19/24 Arizona for a Pac-12 series showdown. The three-game weekend is scheduled to begin on Friday, April 8 at 6 p.m. and continues on Saturday, April 9 at 4:00 p.m. where OSU gymnast and Olympic gold medalist Jade Carey will throw out the first pitch. The series finale is slated for Sunday, April 10 at 11:00 a.m.
