Colorado Tied for Ninth After One Round At Silverado

Apr 4, 2022
Issy Simpson had a season-best round of 75

NAPA, Calif. — The University of Colorado women's golf team is tied for ninth place after the first round of the 2022 Chevron Silverado Showdown, shooting a 14-over par 302 on the 6,192-yard Silverado Resort and Spa North Course on Monday.

The co-host Buffaloes, tied with No. 6 ranked Arizona State, sit just five strokes out of the Top 5 as all but two teams finished the first round over par. No. 5 San Jose State has the lead after 18 holes with a 1-under 287. No. 2 Oregon is right behind the Spartans with an even round of 288. No. 11 Texas A&M is third at 294 (+6), followed by No. 37 Iowa State at 295 (+7) and No. 26 Arizona with 297 (+9).

San Jose State's Antonia Malate, Texas A&M's Hailee Cooper and Arizona State's Alessandra Fanali head the individual leaderboard after one round; each shooting 3-under 69. Only seven of 89 golfers finished under-par through the first 18.

Colorado's 302 is its best first round score in four tournaments and second-best in six spring events. The Buffaloes hovered around the top five for much of the round. Starting the day on the back-nine, the Buffaloes' four scorers played holes 10 through 18 at 4-over.

Colorado fell back to the rest of the pack on the front. The Buffaloes' scoring quartet was still 8-over through 14 holes, but played the last four at 6-over.

But, so did everyone else. San Jose State actually vaulted out to a double-digit lead through its first nine, reaching as high as 8-under before coming back to Earth on the front; clinging to a one-stroke lead at 1-under. Hole No. 6, a par 4 at 393 yards was the toughest course on the day at a 4.65 stroke average while the 344-yard par 4 No. 8 was third at 4.43.

"Overall we played very solid today," Colorado head coach Anne Kelly said. "This course has a challenging layout and today had firm, fast greens."

Colorado sophomore Hailey Schalk led the Buffaloes with a 2-over par 74 and is tied with nine others for 20th place; just two strokes out of the Top 8 and three out of the Top 6. Schalk found herself at 1-under after nine with birdies at a pair of par 4's on No. 14 and No. 17. She had a hiccup at No. 3 with a double-bogey but bounced back to even with a birdie on No. 5, a 487-yard par 5, before finishing out at 2-over.

Ellie Gower and Issy Simpson are one-stroke back of Schalk, each with a 3-over par 75 and tied with 11 others for 30th. For Simpson, in just her seventh round of the season, the 75 was a season-best and two strokes better than her previous low. She had birdies at the 138-yard par 3 No. 11 and the 309-yard par 4 No. 4 to sit at 2-over through 13 holes. Simpson had a pair of bogeys over the next four but finished strong with her third birdie of the round at the 491-yard par 5 No. 9.

Gower had bogeys on three of her first four holes, but played even over the last 15. Gower matched Simpson with three birdies on the round, including two in a three-hole stretch at No. 16 and No. 18.

Senior Diane Baillieux was Colorado's fourth scorer, tying for 59th with a 6-over 78. Senior Malak Bouraeda is tied for 76th after a 9-over 81.

Freshman Natlie Vo, playing as an individual, is tied for 49th with a 5-over 77. Freshman Lauren Gooding, scheduled to compete as an individual for the Buffaloes, withdrew from the round with an injury.

"Ellie, Issy and Hailey played well today," Kelly said. "Diane played well overall, with the exception of a couple holes. Malak had a rough day but is determined to make a come back tomorrow."

Colorado will be paired with San Diego State and TCU, both tied for 11th at 15-over, in Tuesday's second round and will begin on the back nine at 8 a.m. PT/9 a.m. MT.
