Women's Tennis Drops 4-3 Decision to Pepperdine
LOS ANGELES – The No. 16 UCLA women's tennis team went the distance with No. 6 Pepperdine Wednesday afternoon, but was ultimately outlasted at Los Angeles Tennis Center.
The 4-3 final score represents the third such result between the programs since the start of the 2021 dual-match season. Abbey Forbes and Kimmi Hance were victorious in singles play for the Bruins (10-4), who also narrowly claimed the doubles point. Nikki Redelijk turned in the deciding win for the Waves (15-4).
In a tightly-contested doubles competition, all three decisions were necessary and two went to tiebreakers. Pepperdine struck first, as Savannah Broadus and Shiori Fukuda took the final four games from No. 36 Forbes and Ava Catanzarite for a 6-4 result. On Court 3, Hance and Sasha Vagramov took a 4-1 lead, only to have Victoria Flores and Nikki Redelijk force the day's first tiebreaker. The extra action was all UCLA, as Hance and Vagramov seized all seven points.
No. 47 Elysia Bolton and Elise Wagle of the Bruins faced a 0-4 deficit in its top-court showdown with Taisiya Pachkaleva and Lisa Zaar, but ultimately found themselves in a tiebreaker of their own. That proved a back-and-forth affair, with Bolton and Wagle finding their way to an 11-9 win and UCLA to the initial point.
No. 23 Zaar momentarily pulled the Waves even with her 6-4, 6-2 victory against No. 93 Bolton on the second singles court. The top court finished soon after, with No. 43 Forbes knocking off No. 11 Fukuda by a 6-3, 6-4 score. Forbes has now won seven decisions in a row and is 5-3 versus nationally-ranked opponents in 2021-22.
Also extending her personal winning streak was Hance, who captured her eighth in a row with 6-3, 7-5 triumph over No. 86 Savannah Broadus on Court 4. Hance is 11-3 overall and 8-1 in dual matches.
No. 47 Pachkalaeva bested Vagramov on Court 3, 6-3, 7-5, cutting Pepperdine's deficit in half. The Waves would then pull all square on Court 5, where No. 54 Flores handed Wagle a 7-5, 6-3 loss and turned the focus to Court 6.
The Bruins' Vanessa Ong forced the lone third set of the day in what proved to be the final match. No. 97 Redelijk controlled the frame, though, prevailing by 1 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 margin.
UCLA returns to action Friday, when it hosts No. 36 Oregon. First serve in the Pac-12 match – the Bruins' final home contest of the regular season – is set for 1:30 p.m.
