Bears Split Squad Highlight Busy Week

Apr 7, 2022
The Bears will have six boats competing at two events in the Bay Area this weekend.

BERKELEY – The Cal men's rowing team will have a busy weekend as they compete in a pair of races this Saturday and Sunday. Cal will send its top three boats to Redwood Shores for the Pac-12 Challenge cohosted by Cal and Stanford. The Bears will also send three more boats to the Oakland estuary to race in the Ebright Invitational.

"We are getting into it, which is exciting," said head coach Scott Frandsen when discussing this weekend's race schedule. "We had Vegas which was our stepping stone into the racing season, we are excited to get back on the water and see where we stack up. This weekend will be our first big step in the racing for the 2022 season. We will try a couple of different lineups over the course of the weekend and start to get a feel for what our top lineup and second lineup will be."

The Pac-12 Challenge at Redwood Shores will feature boats from Pac-12 schools Stanford, Washington, and Oregon State competing in a series of dual races against boats from Boston University, Northeastern, Wisconsin, and Syracuse.

"We are excited to have boats from the Big 10 and the ACC," said Frandsen. "This is definitely, a learning process and that's what I want it to be. It's a process of figuring out which lineups are clicking as we work our way toward the bigger races this season. Hopefully, we build some confidence off this weekend's races and we will adjust as needed as we head into the Washington dual and Stanford dual later this month."

The Bear's Varsity 8+ will open the Pac-12 Challenge with a head-to-head race against Boston University at 9:10 a.m. on Saturday. Cal's 2V8+ will be the final race of the morning segment when they also race the Terriers at 9:50 a.m.

Later that afternoon, Cal will race three times against Wisconsin with the 2V8+ kicking it off at 3:00 p.m. The V8+ will race at 3:40 and the 3V8+ will finish the day by taking on the Badgers at 4:20 p.m.

On Sunday, Cal's V8+ will race Northeastern at 9:10 a.m. with the 2V8+ also taking on the Huskies at 9:50 a.m. Cal and Oregon State will close out the Pac-12 Challenge with a race between 3V8 at 10:30 a.m.

Both Saturday and Sunday's races will be streamed online via the Cal live stream.

On the other side of the Bay, the Bears will host the Ebright Invitational on Saturday and Sunday at the Oakland Estuary. Cal will test its depth by sending its fourth and fifth V8 boat along with a freshman boat.

"Excited to get all the guys racing," said Frandsen when discussing the Ebright Invitational. "A lot of focus this year was about the depth of our team and the team as a whole. We have boats from UC San Diego, San Diego, Santa Clara, and even Washington will send some boats. It will be great to get to see how our depth compares to some of those schools' top boats."
