BERKELEY – California track & field returns to Edwards Stadium as a ranked team for the first time in several years this weekend, hosting the famed Brutus Hamilton Invitational on Saturday, April 9. The men's hammer throw will kick off the field events at 9:30 a.m. PT, while the women's 5000m run at 11:00 a.m. marks the start of the track events.

The meet is named for Olympian, Hall of Famer and former Cal track & field head coach (and Athletic Director) Brutus Hamilton, who led the Bears' track & field team from 1932-1965. During that time, he coached many of the nation's top athletes (including Don Bowden, the first American to run a sub-4 minute mile) and recruited legendary Cal coaches Lynn "Pappy" Waldorf (football) and Pete Newell (men's basketball). He also served on the NCAA Track and Field Rules Committee for 10 years and coached the U.S. Track and Field National Team on 5 separate occasions.

Cal's men, who are currently ranked No. 15 by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), have not cracked the top 25 since 2014, and boast their highest ranking since 2009's No. 12-ranked Bears team. The women are also currently ranked No. 15 by the USTFCCCA, their first top-25 ranking since 2008 and highest since 2007's 8th-ranked Bears team. 2022 marks the first time in California track & field history that both the men and the women have been ranked as high as 15.

Currently, 11 different event squads are ranked within the top 25 nationally, led by the No. 1 men's discus group. 17 athletes across 12 events also rank as individuals within the top 25. In this outdoor season alone, the Golden Bears have set a world record, a national record, a school record, a NCAA freshman record, two Cal freshman records, two facility records, four meet records, one USTFCCCA weekly award, three Pac-12 weekly awards and 16 new Cal top 10 marks.

Visiting teams at this year's Brutus Hamilton Invitational include Academy of Art, Boise State, Cal State Los Angeles, City College of San Francisco, CSUN, Dominican (Calif.), Modesto Junior College, San Francisco, San Francisco State, Stanford, UC Davis and UC Merced.

The Bears will also honor their 29 graduating seniors in a special ceremony on Saturday, which is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
