Michaela Bayerlova Knocks Off Nation’s 14th-ranked Player

Apr 10, 2022

PULLMAN, Wash. – Fifth-year senior Michaela Bayerlova captured a straight-set win at No. 1 but it was not enough as Washington State fell 6-1 to No. 17 Stanford Sunday morning at Hollingbery Fieldhouse.

Playing against the nation's 14th-ranked player in Stanford's Connie Ma, Bayerlova never trailed as she won for the eighth time in her last nine matches and improved to 6-1 in Pac-12 play. In the No 1 singles match, Bayerlova broke Ma to start the day and steamrolled from there. The Cougar senior raced to a 5-1 lead in the first before closing the set out 6-2. In the second, she broke Ma to open the set and served out the match, winning six of eight deuce points to improve to 16-2 on the season.

Stanford (14-4, 7-1 Pac-12) captured the opening doubles points with wins on Courts 1 and 2. At No. 2, the Cardinal duo of Alexandra Yepifanova and Sara Choy defeated Savanna Ly-Nguyen and Yang Lee 6-1 for the early advantage. On Curt 1, WSU's (6-14, 1-8) Bayerlova and Maxine Murphy led 4-2 before Stanford's Ma and Angelica Blake rallied for four-straight games to win 6-4, clinching the opening point. Court 3 was stopped with WSU's Hania Abouelsaad and Fifa Kumhom tied 4-4 with Stanford's Niluka Madurawe and Valencia Xu.

In singles play, Yepifanova, ranked No. 20 nationally, captured the final three games en route to a 6-1, 6-3 win over Ly-Nguyen at No. 2.

At No. 4, India Houghton completed a 6-2, 6-2 win over Abouelsaad, pushing the Stanford lead to 3-0 and within one match of the team victory. That came at No. 3 when Blake held off Murphy to win 6-2, 6-3 and clinching the win for the Cardinal.

With the team outcome decided, the remaining matches were played to completion. At No. 5, Xu, ranked 117th nationally, posted a 6-2, 6-4 win over Kumhom while Choy rallied for a 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-8) win over Elyse Tse at No. 6.

The Cougars conclude their regular season Friday when they host No. 28 Washington at Hollingbery Fieldhouse. The match begins at 1:10 p.m. when WSU will honor seniors Michaela Bayerlova and Savanna Ly-Nguyen as part of Senior Day festivities.
