Bears Blank Gaels In Moraga

Apr 11, 2022
Tucker Bougie tallied a career-high four strikeouts and helped Cal blank Saint Mary's, 6-0, on the road Monday.

MORAGA, Calif.– Three Golden Bear pitchers combined to toss a two-hit shutout as California went on the road and notched a 6-0 victory over Saint Mary's on Monday afternoon at Louis Guisto Field.

The trio of Aaron Roberts, Tucker Bougie and Connor Sullivan stifled the Gaels' lineup all afternoon, registering five strikeouts to just two hits and two walks on the way to Cal's third consecutive win. The Bears got back to .500 (16-16) overall for the first time since March 26.

Bougie (1-0) picked up his first collegiate win and logged career highs of four strikeouts across four innings pitched through the heart of the Bears' six-run road victory. Cal carried a no-hitter through the fifth inning after Roberts worked two hitless frames as an opener before turning it over to Bougie, who kept Saint Mary's (20-13) without a hit until Blake McDonald roped a leadoff double to right-center field in the sixth.

The shutout was Cal's first since blanking Utah, 7-0, last season on March 26, 2021. It was the first time Saint Mary's had been shut out in 2022, having entered the contest averaging a West Coast Conference-leading 7.0 runs per game.

Trevor Tishenkel put Cal on the board in the second with a solo home run to right field. The Bears scored three more runs in the inning as Nathan Manning drove in Keshawn Ogans with a single up the middle and Nathan Martorella smashed a two-run long ball to right-center. Martorella, who was named the Pac-12 Player of the Week an hour before first pitch, has homered in three of the past four games.

Dylan Beavers made it 5-0 in the sixth by plating Dom Souto with his second of two doubles and Tishenkel delivered the final punch in the ninth with an RBI single through the right side of the infield that scored Hance Smith.
