Course at Pasatiempo Stifles Field, Ducks Eighth

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – Round one went to Pasatiempo.
The golf course above Santa Cruz on the Pacific Ocean was a brutal test for the 14 college golf teams at the 75th annual Western Intercollegiate on Monday. No one shot below par and the median score on the par 70, 6,615- yard course was nine strokes over.
Oregon stood in the middle of the menagerie at 31-over. That was good enough to tie for eighth after the opening 18 holes.
No. 8 Pepperdine led the tournament at 18-over, but still has one hole to play to finish its first round on Tuesday. No. 9 Texas was at plus-21 and No. 6 Washington checked in at 23-over.
How It Happened: Owen Avrit led Oregon with a 4-over 74, while Greyson Leach carded a 75. Nate Stember and Yuki Moriyama checked in with 76s. Avrit was tied for 19th, Leach was tied for 23rd and Stember and Moriyama were tied for 29th.

Notable: Avrit had three of the Ducks' seven birdies on Monday. … As a team on the season, Oregon came into the Western Intercollegiate collectively at 36 strokes over par. … Teams are counting the top five scores among their six golfers for this tournament, as opposed to standard five-count-four the college format.
