Martinez Earns National Weekly Honor
STANFORD, Calif. - Senior Vincent Martinez homered in all three games of a series against Arizona State, including connecting for a pair in Sunday's finale, earning a spot on Collegiate Baseball's National Players of the Week list this week.
Martinez finished the weekend 5 for 11 (.455) with four runs scored, four homers and nine RBIs. He connected for two home runs, including a tie-breaking grand slam in the fourth inning, as Stanford scored a season-best 16 runs on a season-high 22 hits to earn a series sweep on Sunday. The native of San Marcos, Calif. finished Sunday 2 for 4 with two runs scored, a walk and six RBIs – his final two coming on a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh. The six RBIs are the most in a game for Martinez in his career, while Sunday served as his first multi-homer game and ran his season home run total to five.
Over four games last week, Martinez posted a .417 average, 1.417 slugging percentage, four runs scored, four homers and nine RBIs. Contributing crucial long balls all weekend, his solo home run on Friday proved to be the game winner, while his solo homer on Saturday tied the game at two in the fifth.
Martinez' selection from Collegiate Baseball is the second in as many weeks for Stanford, as left-hander Quinn Mathews was lauded last week for his effort at Oregon State.
