UCLA, Spitz Lead Heading Into Final Round at Chambers Bay
UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. – The No. 15 UCLA women's golf team takes a nine-stroke lead into the final round of the Chambers Bay Invitational tomorrow after shooting a 1-under 575 through 36 holes.
Three Bruins, including junior Emma Spitz who sits atop the individual leader board with a three-stroke lead at 6-under 138, are within the top 10 of a field of 107 golfers.
Junior Emilie Paltrinieri is tied for fourth at even-par 144 and freshman Caroline Canales is tied for eighth at 3-over 147. Sophomore Ty Akabane is on the cusp of the top 20 tied for 22nd (7-over 151).
With Spitz's 4-under 68 in round one and 2-under 70 in round two, she has recorded five consecutive under-par rounds dating back to the PING/ASU Invitational on March 25-27. She has now notched six rounds under 70 and 11 total under-par rounds.
Spitz shot an even-par 37 on the front nine of round one and then blitzed the back nine with four birdies, including three in a row on the par-4 14th, par-3 15th and par-4 16th. Spitz went on to record six birdies in her second round.
Paltrinieri followed up her 1-over 73 performance in round one with a 1-under 71 in round two, featuring a flawless front nine of the scorecard and an eagle on the par-12th.
Canales bounced back from her 4-over 76 in her first 18 holes with her fourth under-par score of the season: a 1-under 71. Canales opened her second round with three birdies on the front nine before finishing 2-under 35 through the first nine holes.
Akabane shot a 9-over 81 in round one but would contribute to the team score in her next set of 18 with a 2-under 70 for her second under-par total of the season and first of this calendar year.
Freshman Zoe Antoinette Campos, who competed individually, is tied for 22nd with Akabane at 7-over 151.
Freshman Alessia Nobilio's first round of 4-over 76 contributed to the Bruins' overall score. She birdied the par-4 12th and par-5 18th in that round. To par, Nobilio is eight over and tied for 28th.
UCLA has a shotgun start four round three tomorrow at 8 a.m. PT. Spitz will tee off from the first hole.
