SAN FRANCISCO (April 12, 2022) -- Washington State's Michaela Bayerlova was named the Pac-12 Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday.
Bayerlova, who entered the matches ranked No. 71, went 2-0 last weekend against No. 9 California and No. 15 Stanford. Against Cal, Bayerlova, playing in the No. 1 singles position, led from started to finish as she posted a 6-2, 6-3 win over Haley Giavara, ranked No. 92 nationally. She teamed with freshman Maxine Murphy to post a 6-4 win at No. 1 doubles, defeating Cal's 33rd-ranked duo of Jessica Alsola and Katja Wiersholm, securing the opening point for WSU.
The fifth-year senior from Krumbach, Germany, followed that with an impressive, 6-2, 6-4 win over Stanford's Connie Ma, providing the Cougars their only victory against the Cardinal. Ma had entered the match ranked 14th nationally.
The two wins against the Bay Area schools improved Bayerlova's season record to 16-2, 6-1 in Pac-12 play and 5-1 against nationally-ranked players. She has won eight of her last nine matches, five against nationally-ranked players.
This is the fifth time in Bayerlova's Cougar career she has been named Pac-12 Player of the Week, the most by a Cougar tennis player. She captured the honor twice as a freshman, one as a sophomore and the most recent time, last April when she posted singles and doubles wins leading to WSU's upset victory over No. 16 USC.
The Cougars are next in action Friday when they host Washington at 1:15 p.m. Bayerlova and fellow senior Savanna Ly-Nguyen will be recognized in a pre-match ceremony as part of Senior Day festivities.
