No. 19 Beavers Fall Short in Pac-12 Opener at No. 11 Washington
SEATTLE - The 19-ranked Beavers strung together seven hits, including three from junior Frankie Hammoude at No. 11 Washington, but fell short on Thursday evening as Oregon State dropped a 4-3 decision during the Pac-12 series opener.
Senior Mariah Mazon struck out eight in the complete game, allowing four runs, eight hits and three walks to suffer her fourth loss of the season.
Four other players accounted for OSU's hits, including a two-RBI single from Des Rivera in the top half of the fourth inning.
The Beavers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after the first half inning, as Hammoude plated Savanah Whatley with a single to right.
Washington responded in the bottom half, scattering two hits including a three-run shot to pull ahead 3-1 after one.
Hammouded knocked a leadoff single in the top of the fourth that was followed up by a Grace Messmer double to get the OSU offense going. Rivera evened the game at 3-3 with her double just two batters later.
The Huskies plated the game-winning run just a half inning later as Washington broke through Mazon once again with a solo leadoff shot over right field.
The Beavers and Huskies square off again tomorrow at 6 p.m. PT followed by the series finale on Saturday at 2 pm. PT. Both games will be available on the Pac-12 Networks.
