USC Track & Field Set For Mt. SAC Relays & Beach Invitational This Weekend
The USC Track & Field team will be competing this week at the 62nd Mt. SAC Relays held at the newly renovated Hilmer Lodge Stadium in Walnut, Calif. from April 15-16 and at the Beach Invitational at Jack Rose Stadium in Long Beach from April 15-16. The Mt. SAC Relays will be streamed live at USATF.TV and coverage of the Golden Games at the Mt. SAC Relays on April 16, which will feature several graduated Trojans, will be broadcast live on CNBC from 2-4 p.m.
BARNES STILL ON TOP OF THE WORLD -- Celera Barnes 10.82 (+2.8w) in the 100m run in winning at the Texas Relays on March 26 still ranks as the fastest any condition women's 100m dash in the world this season. It also ranks fifth all-time under any condition by a college runner. Barnes' wind-legal 11.07 on March 25 ranks fourth on USC's all-time list and tied for eighth in the world this season.
TOP 30 TROJANS - The Trojans have 15 athletes and three relays which rank in the top 30 among performances during the early 2022 outdoor season. They are:
Women: Celera Barnes (1st - 100m), Karlee Freeman (11th - DT), Jasmine Jones (6th - 100m H), Bailey Lear (19th - 400m), Joy McArthur (23rd - HT), Samirah Moody (6th - 100m), Jalaysiya Smith (26th - 100m H) and 4x100m (16th)
Men: Eric Allen, Jr. (29th - 200m), Johnnie Blockberger (T-27th - 200m), Jalyn Jackson (13th - TJ), Trey Knight (3rd - HT), Tade Ojora (4th - 110m H), Nicholas Ramey (T20th - 400m) Earnest Sears III (2nd - HJ), Zach Shinnick (16th - 200m), 4x100m (T-14th) and 4x400m (22nd).
50-YEAR/25-YEAR REUNIONS AT DUAL MEET -- As always, the 50-year and 25-year anniversary USC teams will be honored at the USC-UCLA Dual Meet, this year hosted by the Trojans on May 1. This year three teams from each category will be honored due to the alternating site of the meet and due to the cancellation of the 2020 meet due to COVID-19. The 50-year teams to be honored this year will be the the 1971-1972-1973 teams and for the 25-year teams being honored are the 1995-1996-1997 teams.
NOT ALL SEARS ARE CLOSING DOWN -- In fact, USC's Earnest Sears III continues to soar to new heights in the men's high jump. Sears III matched his career-best outdoor clearance of 7-5.25 (2..27m) at the Texas Relays on March 26. That currently ranks second in the country among college athletes and ranks tied for third on USC's all-time list. Sears III owns USC's indoor high jump record with a clearance of 7-6.50 (2.30m) at the Texas Tech Invitational in 2020. Sears III is a two-time outdoor high jump All-American, placing seventh in 2018 and 2021.
ESPER JR. PASSES AWAY -- Longtime voice of USC track and field Dwain Esper Jr. died on April 13 at 100 years of age. Esper Jr. was the USC track and field public address announcer from 1981 when Loker Stadium/Cromwell Field opened until 2002. At one point, he also was the PA announcer for the Mt. SAC Relays where the Trojans are competing this weekend. Funeral arraingments are pending, but Esper will be buried in Arlington Cemetery in Virginia as he earned a U.S. Army Air Force purple heart.
ACTION JACKSON -- USC junior jumper Jalyn Jackson has bests this outdoor season of 51-7.00 (15.72m) in the triple jump and 24-8.50 (7.53m) in the long jump. His triple jump ranks 13th in the country and leads all Pac-12 athletes this season. His long jump ranks fourth in the conference.
THE WISE MAN OF THE PAC -- USC sophomore Dallas Wise ranks among the top Pac-12 jumpers in three events. Wise ranks tied for fifth in the Pac-12 in the high jump at 6-10.75 2.10m), sixth in the triple jump at 48-10.25 (14.89) and 12th in the long jump at 23-2.75 (7.08m). Wise transferred to USC after two years at Coastal Carolina. He earned a silver medal at the 2020 Paralympics (August 2021) in the T46/47 high jump and took fourth in the T46/47 long jump.
THE RECORD-SETTING 4x800M RELAY -- USC's women's 4x800m relay team of Janiah Brown, Gigi Maccagnini, Jemima Russell and Alyssa Brewer ran a school record of 8:38.89 at the Texas Relays on March 26. Brewer had an anchor leg time of 2:06.02. The previous record for USC was 8:45.24 set in 1987 by Michelle Taylor, Julie Seleine, Elise Lyon and Lesley Noll. All four of USC's runners currently rank within the top 20 among Pac-12 800m runners: Maccagnini is 8th (2:06.79), Brown 9th (2:06.91), Brewer is 12th (2:07.80) and Russell is 20th (2:09.27).
TRITON INVITATIONAL RECAP -- USC's strong efforts at the Triton Invitational in San Diego on April 9 were highlighted by wins for Janiah Brown in the women's 1500m (PR of 3:32:42), Jan'Taijah Ford in the women's 200m (23.99), Jasmine Jones in the women's 100m hurdles (13.30), Bailey Lear in the women's 400m (53.39), Tade Ojora in the men's 110m hurdles (14.06) and Nicholas Ramey in the men's 400m (46.13). Also, Karlee Freeman placed sixth in the women's invitational discus throw with a personal best of 185-8 (56.61m). Her mark was the best among the collegians in the competition and bettered her fourth-place standing on USC's all-time list in the event. Summer Mosley took third in the women's open discus competition with a big PR of 169-2 (51.58m) to move into 8th place on USC"s all-time discus throw list.
RETURNING ALL-AMERICANS -- USC has eight returning outdoor All-Americans who scored at the 2021 NCAA Championships. Women: Jasmine Jones (4x100m), Bailey Lear (400m, 4x400m), Temi Ojora (TJ), Kaelin Roberts (4x400m). Men: Davonte Burnett (100m, 200m), Tade Ojora (110m H), Nicholas Ramey (4x400m), Earnest Sears III (HJ).
