McMorris Shines In Decathlon At Mt. SAC

Apr 15, 2022

BERKELEY – California track & field reached the heart of its outdoor season on Thursday with the beginning of a three-meet slate that started with the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut and continued with the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa. The final meet, the Long Beach Invitational in Long Beach, will begin on Friday.

At the Mt. SAC Relays, Hakim McMorris made his 2022 decathlon debut by posting personal records in 7 of 10 events on his way to a third-place total of 7941, fourth-most in program history. His 100m dash time of 10.42 ties the mark set last week by David Foster, which is sixth in Cal history; McMorris also moved onto Cal's 400m top 10 list after finishing the race in 46.36 (9th all-time).

"I am so proud of Hakim," said assistant coach Dan Lefever, who leads the vertical jumps and the multi-event squads. "This has been a long time coming, so it's great to see it finally come together. There's definitely more in him, but we'll focus on celebrating this one right now."

A few other Bears entered the prelims for their respective events on Thursday, with seven total entries advancing to Friday's finals. Josh Johnson qualified for the finals in both the shot put and the discus throw, posting a season-best mark of 19.79m (64-11.25) in the former and 53.70m (176-2) in the latter. Iffy Joyner also qualified for the Bears in the discus throw, reaching a best distance of 55.65m (182-7), while Jeff Duensing moved up to 10th in program history in the shot put with his heave of 18.47m (60-7.25). Finally, Jake Porter also moved on to the shot put finals with his throw of 18.23m (59-9.75).

On the women's side, Amelia Flynt advanced to the shot put finals after reaching a distance of 16.23m (53-3), while Jasmine Blair also reached the next round in the discus throw with her 53.51m (175-6). Erin Archibeck represented Cal's distance runners at Thursday's Mt. SAC session, racing to a time of 34:10.05 in the invitational 10000m run for the eighth-fastest time in program history.

At the Bryan Clay Invitational, two of Cal's distance runners – Marea Zlatunich and Colin FitzGerald – took on the 5000m run. Zlatunich finished second in her section, adding yet another top finish to her collection this season with a personal-best time of 16:31.94. FitzGerald set his own personal record of 14:31.05, finishing 12th in his own section.

On Friday, the Bears continue competition at the Mt. SAC Relays and the Bryan Clay Invitational while also kicking off at the Long Beach Invitational.
