Abba Breaks School Record, Throwers Shine On Day Three

Apr 16, 2022

BERKELEY – California track & field competed in the bulk of its events at the famous Mt. SAC Relays on Friday, testing their skills against hundreds of the nation's best collegiate athletes. The Bears (No. 13 women, No. 22 men) posted a slew of top marks, but it was Ezinne Abba who stole the show by breaking her own school record in the 100m dash, blazing to a time of 11.26 to qualify for Saturday's finals and further cementing herself as one of the greatest sprinters of all time at Cal.

Abba was not the only standout on the women's side. Sophomore Jada Hicks continued her climb up the Cal record books by finishing the 100m hurdles in 13.57, fifth all-time at Cal. In the 100m dash, Maisie Stevens posted a time of 11.44, just 0.01 seconds off her personal record, while freshman Aysha Shaheed lowered her PR to 11.69 for the ninth-fastest time in Cal history. Asha Fletcher posted season-best marks in the triple jump and the long jump, leaping 13.10m (42-11.75) in the former and a wind-aided 6.10m (20-0.25) in the latter. Hawa Wague also reached a season-best jump mark, clearing the high jump bar at 1.75m (5-8.75). In the hammer throw preliminary round, Anna Purchase advanced to the finals after a first-place toss of 67.34m (220-11) in the preliminary round, while teammate Rebecca Tomann posted a throw of 57.41m (188-4) – her best as a Golden Bear.

Senior Josh Johnson gained further control of the second-best shot put mark in program history with a PR of 19.89m (65-3.25) in the event, finishing third in the finals. Teammate Jeff Duensing, meanwhile, posted a personal best of his own, reaching a distance of 18.86m (61-10.5) to move up to eighth all-time at Cal. In the men's discus throw, Iffy Joyner finished third with a heave of 59.43m (194-11), while Ivar Moisander took sixth in the hammer throw preliminary round to qualify for Saturday's finals with his 66.07m (216-9). Michael Gupta also competed in the hammer throw, reaching a PR of 63.12m (207-1) to rise to 10th in Cal history. Finally, Garrett MacQuiddy posted yet another superb race on the track, outright winning the men's 1500m collegiate open with his time of 3:44.36.

Meredith Corda also competed for the Bears in the Bryan Clay Invitational on Friday, finishing the 1500m in a personal-best 4:27.70
