Jelagat Sets Freshman 10,000m Record At Mt. SAC Relays

WALNUT, Calif.— Freshman Mevin Jelagat's 10,000m freshman record highlighted the Washington State men's and women's track and field teams performance at the Mt. SAC Relays, as Cougars claimed 11 top-10 finishes to close out their trip to California.

Freshman Mevin Jelagat ran her way into WSU history, by setting the WSU freshman 10,000m record with a time of 34:05.10 in the women's open 10,000m race. Jelagat's time is also the third-fastest women's 10,000m in Cougar history, as she placed fifth overall in the event.
 
Jelagat was not alone, three other Cougars ran all-time program marks at the Mt, SAC Relays. Junior Skyler Walton tied the fourth-fastest women's 100m dash in program history with her time of 11.61. Walton placed 22nd overall out of 63 competitors in the event.
 
Sophomore Caroline Jerotich and graduate student Pia Richards each recorded a WSU top-10 mark in the women's 3,000m steeplechase. Jerotich ran a personal-best 10:20.87, which is the sixth-fastest recorded time in the 3,000m in WSU history, to finish ninth. Richards finished right behind Jerotich, with a personal-record time of 10:24.59 to place 10th. Richards' time is the seventh-fastest mark in WSU history.
 
The Cougar's success was not limited to the track. Junior Aislinn Overby leaped her way to fifth place in the women's high jump by clearing a height of 1.75m. Senior Jacob Englar also placed inside the top-10 in the men's pole vault. His mark of 5.00m earned him a sixth-place finish in the event.
 
Graduate student Mitch Jacobson placed seventh overall in the men's invitational high jump with a mark of 2.07m.
 
Back on the track, the women's 1,600m team of juniors Mackenzie Fletcher, Jasneet Nijjar, Elise Unruh-Thomas, and Elena Willems recorded a season-best time of 3:42.71 and placed fourth overall in the event.
 
Freshman Micaela De Mello continued her outstanding outdoor season with another top-five finish in the women's 100m hurdles event. She placed fifth in the race with a time of 13.31 seconds.
 
Freshman Kelvin Limo set a new personal record in the men's 3,000m steeplechase. He finished the race with a time of 8:49.93 and placed eighth in the event.
 
Beach Invitational
Due to a last-minute schedule change, Micalea De Mello competed in the women's 100m hurdles event at the Beach Invitational in Long Beach, California, Saturday, April 16. De Mello recorded a time of 13.13 and placed second overall out of 83 athletes entered in the event.
 
Next Up
The Washington State men's and women's track and field team will be home in Pullman, hosting a meet in the 2022 outdoor season for the first time. The WSU-UW Dual is set for Friday, April 22, at the Mooberry Track and Field Complex.
