No. 3 UCLA Falls at No. 1 USC, 9-7

LOS ANGELES -- No. 3 UCLA (22-3, 4-2 MPSF) dropped its regular season finale at No. 1 USC (17-2, 6-0 MPSF), 9-7, on Saturday afternoon at Uytengsu Aquatics Center. The Bruins fell to 53-37 all-time against the Trojans.

The Bruins were led by freshman Molly Renner and redshirt senior Maddie Musselman, each with a game-high-tying two goals.

Sophomore goalkeeper Sydney Chiang got the start in the cage and went the distance, registering eight saves while allowing nine goals.

Mireia Guiral and Paige Hauschild each scored twice to lead the Trojans.

PERIOD ONE
> UCLA battled to a 2-2 draw in the opening period.
> Tilly Kearns scored the opening goal on a back-handed shot from two meters (6:40) to put the Trojans up 1-0.
> Bella Wentzel answered for UCLA with a goal from the front court (6:23).
> Hauschild put USC back in front (6:01) with a strike from the front court.
> Ava Johnson took a nice feed from Hannah Palmer to tie the game at 2-2 with a power play goal (2:07).
 
PERIOD TWO
> USC won the second period, 3-1.
> Grace Tehaney put the Trojans back in front with a score from the front court (7:39).
> Alejandra Aznar put USC up 4-2 with a score from the frontcourt (4:30).
> Malia Allen scored on a nearside heater that beat the keeper to pull UCLA within one (3:58).
> Julia Janov scored a power play goal after a turnover by Allen to push the Trojan lead to 5-3 (0:53)
> UCLA trailed 5-3 at the break.
 
PERIOD THREE
> The Bruins turned the tables on the Trojans, winning the third period, 3-2.
> Renner opened the scoring in the third with a buzzer-beating (shot clock) goal from the front court (7:23).
> Guiral pushed the lead back to two with a strike from the front court (6:52).
> Musselman scored from the front court to pull the Bruins to within one at 6-5 (6:09).
> Sophia Lucas scored from the front court for the Trojans to push the lead to two again (4:03).
> Renner became the first multiple-goal scorer of the game when she took a feed from Musselman to score on a power play (3:30) to cut the Trojans' lead to 7-6.
> Musselman's penalty shot hit the post with :33 remaining to leave the score at 7-6 USC heading into the fourth.

PERIOD FOUR
> The Trojans outscored the Bruins, 2-1, in the fourth period to provide the 9-7 final score.
> Hauschild opened the scoring in the final period with a cross-cage shot (7:23).
> Musselman answered with her second goal of the game on a power play off a feed from Allen (6:42) to make it a one-goal game at 8-7.
> Guiral pushed the lead to 9-7 (1:23) with a cross-cage shot after the Trojans got a stop on a Bruin power play.
> It would hold as the final score of the game.

UP NEXT
The Bruins will be at USC again next week for the 2022 MPSF Women's Water Polo Championship (Apr. 22-24). Third-seeded UCLA will take on sixth-seeded Indiana on Friday, Apr. 22 at 12:45 p.m. PT.
