Offense Starts Big, Defense Finishes Strong In Scrimmage

Apr 16, 2022
Cal had a 67-play scrimmage Saturday at FTX Field at California Memorial Stadium.

BERKELEY – Cal's offense came out strong by scoring touchdowns on its first two drives of a 67-play scrimmage Saturday at FTX Field at California Memorial Stadium. Jack Plummer marched the Golden Bear offense 65 yards in eight plays on the opening drive that culminated with his five-yard touchdown pass to Jeremiah Hunter. Mavin Anderson then took a reserve 65 yards for a touchdown on the opening play of the second drive.

Plummer (9-15-0-105, 1 TD), Kai Millner (12-19-1-87) and Zach Johnson (3-5-0-29) all saw reps at quarterback and combined to complete 24-of-37 passes for 221 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Their 24 completions were spilt among 15 different targets with J.Michael Sturdivant (3-36), Aidan Lee (3-32) and Tommy Christakos (3-31) each picking up three catches. Anderson's 65 rushing yards on a single carry led the Golden Bears on the ground, while Ashton Stredick had a game-high seven carries for 18 yards.

The offensive picked up 314 total yards (221 passing, 93 rushing) but the defense was able to hold the offense out of the end zone for the final 10 drives and got to the quarterback for 5.0 sacks. Derek Wilkins (-10 yards), Myles Jernigan (-7 yards) and Ethan Saunders (-2 yards) were each credited with 1.0 sack, while Ricky Correia, Braxten Croteau (-2 yards), Jaedon Roberts (-4 yards) and Myles Williams (-3 yards) had one-half sack each. Evan McLurkin's interception was the game's only turnover, while Raymond Woodie III had a scrimmage-high six tackles.

The scrimmage included one field goal period with Dario Longhetto good on all three of his attempts from 38, 40 and 42 yards out. Nick Lopez was also good from 38 and 40 yards before missing wide left from 42.

"The competitiveness was noticeable right away," Cal's Travers Family Head Football Coach Justin Wilcox said after the scrimmage. "You're seeing that from every position group at practice and then certainly today when it was more of a scrimmage-type of atmosphere. Guys are out there competing really hard."

The Golden Bears will continue their spring practice sessions each Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday through April 30. All remaining weekday workouts are scheduled to begin at 9:45 am, while the April 23 Saturday session begins at 9 am and the Cal Football Spring Showcase on April 30 at Noon with live television coverage by the Pac-12 Networks/Pac-12 Bay Area starting at 1:30 pm.

All events are admission free and attendees can enter the venue via Gate 2 in the northwest corner of the stadium.
