Throwers, Sprinters Make More NCAA, School History At Mt. SAC

Apr 16, 2022

BERKELEY – As California track & field closed out their long slate of competition on Saturday, the Golden Bears (No. 13 women, No. 22 men) made a definitive impact at the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays by breaking three records and posting an additional NCAA top five mark.

Camryn Rogers broke her own collegiate record in the hammer throw, reaching a distance of 75.73m (248-5) on her fifth throw to surpass the mark that she set at the 2021 NCAA Outdoor National Championships, as well as tying the Canadian national record. In the end, she finished second in the elite invitational section behind only fellow Olympian Brooke Andersen, who owns the world's No. 1 hammer throw this year. Teammate Anna Purchase won the hammer throw collegiate open, posting her own impressive mark of 69.56m (228-3).

Fresh off a school-record 100m dash effort on Friday, Ezinne Abba finished third in the event final and improved her PR by 0.15 seconds to reset the program record. She followed that up with a second Cal record in the 4x100m relay, finishing in 43.99 with a squad that also included Jada Hicks, Maisie Stevens and Aysha Shaheed.

NCAA-leading freshman Mykolas Alekna took second place in the elite invitational section of the discus throw, trailing only reigning Olympic Champion Daniel Stahl with a throw of 66.61m (218-6) and surpassing three other Olympians (and reigning NCAA champion Turner Washington) in the event. Alekna joins Olympian and former Penn thrower Sam Mattis as the only two men to record multiple top-10 throws in NCAA history, with the former's mark coming in fifth all-time behind his third-ranked 66.70m (218-10) from the Aztec Invitational.

At this point, assistant coach Mohamad Saatara (throws) is running out of adjectives to describe Alekna.

"He's a legendary kid," he said. "This is rare territory."
