Baseball Loses Midweek Opener To Gonzaga

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Justin Boyd drove in three runs and stole three bases as No. 2 Oregon State lost to No. 12 Gonzaga, 13-6, Monday in the first of two games between the teams at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field.
Boyd drove in all three runs – and his three stolen bases, for that matter – in the first two innings as Oregon State (27-8) found itself up 6-4 entering the third inning. Gonzaga (24-9), however, utilized a seven-run third inning to go ahead for good.
Boyd, Wade Meckler and Jake Dukart all posted two hits for the Beavers, who finished with 10 as a team. Dukart doubled and hit his third triple of the season.
Jacob Rutherford earned the win for Gonzaga, tossing 4 2/3 innings in relief. He scattered three hits and a run to improve to 2-0 on the year.
Jaren Hunter started for the Beavers, taking the loss to drop to 1-1 on the year. He gave up seven hits and eight runs in two innings.

- Justin Boyd stole three bases in the first two innings to tally 19 on the year, which surpasses UCLA's Kenny Oyama (17) for the Pac-12 lead.
- The Beavers' six stolen bases Monday marked the most by a Pac-12 squad this season.
- Oregon State now has 52 stolen bases on the season, which ties the Beavers with UCLA for the Pac-12 lead.
- Jayson Hibbard tossed a season-long two innings in relief. His previous long was 1 2/3 innings versus Grand Canyon on March 16.
- Justin Thorsteinson finished with a career-long seven innings as well. He surpassed 1 2/3 innings, also against Grand Canyon on March 16.
- David Case made his first appearance since Feb. 19 versus Gonzaga. He pitched a scoreless eighth inning.
- Wade Meckler has reached base safely in all 35 games this season. He posted his 15th multi-hit effort of the year. That's four more than his entire 2021 total.
- Jaren Hunter's loss was just the second by an OSU starter this season. The Beavers' starters are now 15-2 on the year.
