Nichols Earns Second Player Of The Week Honor
SAN FRANCISCO – Colorado track and field senior Abby Nichols has been named the Pac-12 Women's Track Athlete Of The Week, the conference announced Tuesday.
Nichols ran the eighth-fastest time in NCAA history last Friday in the Mt. SAC Relays Elite Women's 5,000-meter run. Her time of 15:15.95 is second in CU history only to the NCAA record held by Jenny Simpson.
This is Nichols' second honor this season, joining Sage Hurta and Emily Hunsucker as the only athletes in CU history to earn the honor twice, as well in one season. This is also the third-straight week a CU athlete has been honored, a first after Eduardo Herrera gave CU its first back-to-back winners in Nichols and Herrera.
Nichols has had an amazing season so far. She has not lost a race to a collegiate athlete and held the NCAA lead in the women's 5,000 every Friday in the month of April. She momentarily lost the lead last Thursday, but that change didn't last more than 24 hours. She leads the NCAA currently by two seconds and has a 25-second gap on the 10th-ranked athlete.
With her top-10 time in NCAA history and the addition of Alabama's Mery Chelangat to the top-10 list, CU is now the only school with multiple athletes in the NCAA top-10 list for the women's 5,000.
After last week, most of the athletes will take a short break, but CU will be competing this week at the Kit Mayer Classic at Colorado School of Mines tomorrow as well as at the Jack Christiansen Invitational at CSU this Friday and Saturday.
