2022 Spring Football: One on One With Justin Medlock

Apr 20, 2022

Salt Lake City – With just days to go until the 2022 Utah Football Spring Game, Utah fans are going to have the opportunity to see new faces on Saturday, April 23 with several freshmen and transfers making their debuts in the red and white.

One of those new faces who has been making big plays on the practice field is linebacker Justin Medlock. The Missouri City, Texas, product was a three-year starter at Manvel High School where he helped guide his team to a Class 5A Division I regional semifinal in 2021.

During that campaign he totaled 97 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks and was named a finalist for the 2021 Whataburger Super Team. Medlock comes from a family with deep ties to the turf as his brother and dad both played division one football.

UtahUtes.com talked with Medlock for a Q&A this week to talk about why he came to Utah, who his favorite football player was growing up and what his family means to him.

Q: Why did you decide to come to Utah?
A: I just fell in love with the culture from day one. When the coaches started recruiting me, I really liked the pedigree that they held their players to, which appealed to me.

Q: What is your mindset like once the ball is snaped?
A: Don't get punked honestly. Be the stronger man who just plays harder and is more physical.

Q: Who's your favorite superhero?
A: Batman because he is just straight hands and weapons, he doesn't have any superpowers.

Q: What is your favorite memory from high school football?
A: Just those bus rides back to school after every game.

Q: Which of the coaches would you pick to go on a road trip with?
A: Coach Swan or Coach Shah. Coach Swan and I both know each other well so that would be cool and then Coach Shah because he's been a constant supporter of mine since I got here in January.

Q: Who was your favorite football player growing up?
A: Cam Newton because he brought his own swag and style to the game.

Q: What does family mean to you?
A: Family is everything, blood is thicker than water. They are my biggest supporters and I talk to them every day.

Q: Who's the best football player in your family?
A: Me hands down. You can cut on the tape or call who you want but it's me.

Q: If you could eat dinner with any three people dead or alive who would you choose?
A: Kobe, Michael Jordan, and a young Beyonce since she's from Houston.

Q: Whataburger or In-N-Out?
A: Whataburger all the way, you know where I'm from.

Q: Who's the worst dancer on the team
A: Lander Barton. I know he's the worst after watching him try to dance during practice.

Q: What are you most looking forward to about Saturdays in Rice-Eccles?
A: Just being able to go out there with my new brothers to compete and contribute in any way I can.
