Buffaloes Fall In Opening Round
OJAI, Calif. – The University of Colorado women's tennis team posted a program-best three points in the opening round of the Pac-12 Championships, but ultimately fell here 4-3 to No.37-ranked Oregon Wednesday evening.
The Buffaloes (8-14, 1-9 Pac-12) close out the season nearly completing the upset over the Ducks (15-7, 5-5 Pac-12) after picking up the first doubles point for CU in the short tournament's history for CU.
Ky Ecton and Mila Stanojevic got things going early for Colorado in the No.2 doubles match, taking down Allison Mulville and Myah Petchey by a score of 6-2. Shortly after, Antonia Balzert and Caroline Pozo defeated Sophie Luescher and Uxia Martinez Moral 6-4 in the No.1 doubles match to clinch the point. Ellen Puzak and Betina Tokac were trailing 5-3 in the No.3 match when the point was clinched.
Moving to singles, Karin Young tied things up against Megan Forster in the No.4 singles match by a score of 6-2, 6-0. Ares Teixido gave Oregon the lead with a 6-1, 6-4 win against Maria Campos in the No.3 singles, then Balzert fell in the No.1 singles match to Luescher 6-2, 6-1.
Despite dropping the first three singles matches, Colorado had a chance late. Pozo and Tokac each had won their opening sets and were leading in the second sets when Stanojevic won her second set to force a third set.
Tokac was the first to break the streak of Oregon wins, taking down Mulville 6-4, 6-0. Pozo came next to tie up the match at three apiece with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Petchey in the No.2 singles match. It all came down to the third set for the No.5 singles match with Stanojevic against Martinez Moral.
The two opened play trading 6-1 sets, with Stanojevic making the second set comeback to tie it up. They were tied 2-2 when the Colorado singles wins were on the cusp of being captured. Despite the strong battle, Martinez Moral captured the final set 6-4 to send the Ducks to the next round.
The Buffs finished the first season under head coach Anthony Pham with three ranked wins in the season. The team progressively got better, culminating in the most points in the Pac-12 Tournament in CU history. Prior to today, CU had only scored a single point in the No.6 singles match against Washington back in 2018.
Head Coach Anthony Pham
"Obviously tough loss for the team today. But very proud of the way we competed and the fight we showed today. This team has come a long ways this year and specifically the last month and its bad we won't get another chance to compete together. Thanks to our seniors Meg, Ky and Caroline for everything they've done for the program and they've 100% left it in a better place than when they found it. The future is bright for the Buffs!"
