Hansen Strikes Out 12 in Win
EUGENE, Ore. – Stevie Hansen struck out a career-high 12 batters as No. 19 Oregon defeated Portland State 5-2 Tuesday night in front of 1,410 at Jane Sanders Stadium.
Rachel Cid homered and Paige Sinicki and Kai Luschar both scored twice to back Hansen's best effort of the season.
"I think this whole year we've been working a lot on getting ahead and putting hitters away," said Hansen. "And trying to stay ahead and keep them guessing."
How it Happened: Hansen came out firing as she struck out the side in order in the top of the first.
She worked around a leadoff triple in the second inning to keep the Vikings off the scoreboard. Paetynn Lopez chopped a ball down the line into the right field corner and ended up on third base. Hansen responded by striking out Natalia Martinez looking and inducing a fly ball from Mariah Rodriguez to Luschar in left that wasn't deep enough to score Lopez.
The inning ended in an eight-pitch battle with Kiara McCrea, who fouled off three pitches on a 2-2 count before Hansen got her to swing and miss.
Hansen struck out two more in the third and the fifth and capped her night by striking out the side in the top of the sixth as she earned her 10th win of the season against five losses.
The Ducks (26-13) used their speed to put the pressure on the Vikings (24-15) throughout the game. In the third inning, Luschar singled and stole second base. Sinicki followed with an infield single and Luschar scored when shortstop Olivia Dean's throw to first got away.
Sinicki moved over to third on a wild pitch and scored on Allee Bunker's line drive that glanced off the glove of first baseman Emily Johansen for a 2-0 lead.
Cid homered in the third inning. Her third home run of the year bounced high off the screen in left field.
The Ducks scored two more times in the fifth inning. Luchar singled for her second hit of the night and ran to third as the Vikings committed two errors on the play. Sinicki reached on a fielder's choice and then Luschar stole home when Sinicki drew a throw to second on a fake steal attempt.
Hanna Delgado walked and then she and Sinicki moved up 60 feet on a double steal. Terra McGowan brought Sinicki home on an RBI ground out to second to give Oregon a 5-0 lead.
Noteworthy: Tuesday marked the 12th game this season that Oregon stole three or more bases. Delgado and Luschar each had two steals while Sinicki had one. … Delgado leads the Ducks with 13 steals, while Sinicki has 11. … Batting eighth and ninth, freshmen Luschar and Sinicki went 3-for-5 with four runs and three stolen bases. … Hansen's 12 strikeouts were the most for a Duck since Makenna Kliethermes fanned 15 in the season opener against Ole Miss. … Abby Mulvey made her first appearance of the season, pinch-running for Allison Benning in the fourth inning.
On Deck: Oregon hosts No. 11 Washington in a three-game series that begins Friday at 7 p.m. (Pac-12 Network).
3B Rachel Cid on the Washington series
"Washington's always a tough series for us, just knowing that we're going to prepare, we set small goals within these games and it's always, take our hacks, have plenty at-bats, and be able to have energy innings one through seven."
