Oregon, Utah, Washington State win openers at 2022 Pac-12 Women's Tennis Championship

OJAI, Calif. - No. 6 seed Oregon, No. 9 seed Utah and No. 10 seed Washington State posted opening-round victories on the first day of the 2022 Pac-12 Women's Tennis Championship at Ojai Valley Athletic Club on Wednesday.

In a match that came down to the very last, the Ducks defeated No. 11 seed Colorado, 4-3, with the clincher coming from Uxia Martinez Moral on court No. 5 in the only three-set match of the day (6-1, 1-6, 6-3). The Buffs captured their first doubles point in the history of the tournament, but before Martinez Moral, Oregon received singles victories from Sophie LuescherAres Teixido and Karin Young.

The Utes defeated No. 8 seed Arizona, 4-1, to claim their first Pac-12 Women's Tennis Championship victory since 2017. The Utes clinched the doubles point with wins on courts one (Linda Huang/Madison Tattini) and two (Anastasia Goncharova/Emily Dush). Tattini was the first to finish in singles on court No. 5, collecting a 6-1, 6-3 win. She was followed by victories from Anya Lamoreaux on court No. 6 (6-2, 6-3) and Anastasia Goncharova on court No. 4 (6-4, 6-1). 

The seventh-seeded Huskies won the doubles point in their match against WSU, but the Cougars stormed back with four singles victories on court Nos. 2 (Savanna Ly Nguyen), 4 (Hania Abouelsaad), 5 (Fifa Kumhom) and 6 (Elyse Tse). Kumhom secured the deciding point with her 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 5.

USC and Arizona State will meet in the No. 4-5 matchup in tomorrow's quarterfinal opener at 9 a.m. PT, while Utah will continue its tournament against No. 1 seed California at noon PT. Washington State will match up with No. 2 seed UCLA at 3 p.m. PT and the Ducks will face third-seeded Stanford in the nightcap at 6 p.m. PT.

Thursday’s winners advance to the semifinals to be played at noon PT and 3 p.m. PT on Friday at OVAC.  On Saturday, the women’s final will be played at Libbey Park and will be broadcast live starting at noon PT on Pac-12 Los Angeles.
