Bears Renew Rivalry With Huskies

The Bears race longtime rival Washington on Saturday at Redwood Shores.

BERKELEY – The Cal women's rowing team returns to the water on Saturday and takes on longtime rival Washington in the annual Cal-UW Dual. Saturday's races will be streamed on the Cal Live Steam and will feature five boats from the Bears.

The varsity eight rivalry dates back to 1977, with UW owning a 24-20 advantage in the series. The two schools both claim long stretches of dominance in the race. The Huskies won the race 22 times in 23 years from 1981-03, however, the Bears have returned serve to own the series in the 2000s – including a stretch of six-straight wins prior to the 2021 season.

"We've had some amazing battles with the Huskies in the past and there's no doubt that this Saturday will be equally as intense," said head coach Al Acosta. "This race means a lot to the team and our alums, and of course, we'd all love to see the Simpson Cup back in Berkeley. Our team knows the energy around this event is unlike any other race and that it's an honor to have this opportunity to go head-to-head with Washington."

Cal will send five boats to Redwood Shores this weekend, three varsity eights, a freshman eight, and a varsity four crew. Saturday's race will be streamed via the Cal Live Stream and can be accessed here or by clicking the link above.
