Ducks Fall To No. 18 Stanford In Pac-12 Quarterfinals

Apr 21, 2022

OJAI, Calif. – Oregon put up a strong fight in doubles before falling in the opening point, and couldn't bounce back from a slow start in singles in a 4-0 loss to No. 18 Stanford in the Pac-12 Championship quarterfinals Thursday night.
The Ducks will now wait until May 2 to find out their NCAA Tournament fate, currently with a 15-8 overall record.
How It Happened: The Ducks battled in doubles but ultimately came up short. After falling, 6-2, at the No. 3 spot, the other two UO pairs took their matches down to the wire at No. 1 and 3. Uxia Martinez Moral and Sophie Luescher gave the No. 13 doubles pair in the country in Connie Ma and Angelica Blake of Stanford all they could handle, pushing their match to 5-5 before it was halted.  Lillian Mould and Ares Teixido Garcia led 4-1 but ended up falling, 6-4, with the Cardinal winning the match on a deciding point to lock up doubles.
In singles, the Ducks couldn't overcome some slow starts as they fell in the opening set at five of the six spots. Teixido Garcia lost 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 3 spot to make it 2-0 before Misaki Kobayashi fell 6-2, 6-2 at No. 6 and Myah Petchey dropped her match at the second spot, 6-2, 6-2, to No. 21 Alexandra Yepifanova, clinching the match for Stanford.
Martinez Moral was the only Duck to take an opening set as her match was halted at 6-1, 2-6, 0-1 while Karin Young led in the second set after falling in the first at No. 4 in a match that was stopped at 3-6, 4-3.
What It Means: Despite the loss, the Ducks have built a strong case for themselves to earn an NCAA Tournament bid. UO came into the week ranked No. 37 in the ITA Computer Rankings and has four wins over teams currently ranked in the top 60 of the rankings. Oregon's 15 wins are also the most since the 2018 season – the last time the Ducks made the NCAA Tournament – while the team's four road wins are the most since the 2017 season. Additionally, all eight of Oregon's losses have come against teams in the ITA top 75, including seven away from home.
