No. 16 UCLA Hands Cougars 4-1 Defeat

Apr 21, 2022

OJAI, Calif. (April 21, 2022) – Freshman Elyse Tse provided the bright spot for Washington State, winning in straight sets, but it was not enough as No. 16 UCLA captured a 4-1 victory Thursday in a quarterfinal match at the 2022 Pac-12 Tennis Championship, played at the Ojai Valley Tennis Club.

Tse captured a victory at No. 6 singles, posting a 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) win over UCLA's Ava Catanzarite. It was a strong way for the freshman to end her season, with back-to-back singles wins at the Pac-12 Championship.

The match began with doubles where UCLA jumped all over the Cougars, winning 6-0 on Court 1 and 6-1 on Court 3 to take the opening point. Court 2 was stopped once the point was clinched with UCLA leading 4-2.

In singles play, UCLA's Kimmi Hance was strong in defeating Hania Abouelsaad, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4 while Vanessa Ong increased UCLA's lead to 3-0 with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Fifa Kumhom at No. 5.

After Tse's victory, the deciding point came at No. 3, where UCLA's Sasha Vagramov held off a late charge by Maxine Murphy in a 6-1, 6-4 win, ending the match at 4-1. The two remaining matches were stopped with WSU's Michaela Bayerlova, ranked No. 43 nationally, trailing UCLA's Abbey Forbes, ranked No. 27, 6-2, 5-4 at No. 1 singles. At No. 2, Cougar senior Savanna Ly-Nguyen was locked in a tight second set, trailing 6-4, 6-5 to No. 53 Elysia Bolton.

The Cougars close their first dual season under head coach Raquel Atawo with an 8-15 record, which included two wins over Top 35 Washington in the final three matches. The Cougars will wait until NCAA selections for singles and doubles are made to see whose season may be extended.
