USC Track & Field To Compete At Chris Rinne Twilight

The USC Track & Field team will be competing this week at the Chris Rinne Twilight meet on April 22.    The meet begins at 2:15 p.m. and ends at 9 p.m.

MT. SAC RELAYS & BEACH INVITATIONAL RECAP -- Three Trojans won events and nine Trojans had top five finishes at the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays held at the newly remodeled Hilmer Lodge Stadium from April 15-16.  Earnest Sears III won the Invitational Elite high jump with a clearance of 7-6.50 (2.30m) which moved him to second on USC's all-time list and tied for the world-leading mark.  Davonte Burnett won the men's Collegiate/Open 100m dash with a time of 9.99 (+0.3) which moved him to second on USC's all-time list.  Jasmine Jones won the women's Collegiate/Open 100m hurdles title, running 13.14 (-2.6).  Mihajla Milovanovic led the Trojans at the Beach Invitational on April 15-16.  She took fifth in her first 5000m race as a collegian with a time of 17.55.99 on April 15.  Milovanovic then led a group of men's and women's 1500m runners on April 16 at the Beach Invitational, placing 17th with a time of 4:43.43.

TOP 30 TROJANS - The Trojans have 19 athletes and three relays which rank in the top 30 among performances during the 2022 outdoor season.  They are:

Women: Celera Barnes (1st - 100m), Jan'Taijah Ford (T-10th - 400m), Karlee Freeman (13th - DT), Jasmine Jones (8th - 100m H), Bailey Lear (24th - 400m), Joy McArthur (23rd - HT), Samirah Moody (8th - 100m), Temi Ojora (T-23rd - TJ), Jalaysiya Smith (T-28th - 100m H) and 4x100m (24th).

Men: Johnnie Blockberger (20th - 400m), Davonte Burnett (3rd - 100m), Jalyn Jackson (T-26th, LJ, 20th - TJ), Christian Johnson (24th - HT),  Trey Knight (5th - HT), Tade Ojora (5th - 110m H), Bobby Poynter (28th - 800m),  Earnest Sears III (T-1st - HJ), Zach Shinnick (24th - 200m), Sam VanDorpe (23rd - 800m), 4x100m (T-18th) and 4x400m (30th).

50-YEAR/25-YEAR REUNIONS AT DUAL MEET -- As always, the 50-year and 25-year anniversary USC teams will be honored at the USC-UCLA Dual Meet, this year hosted by the Trojans on May 1.  This year three teams from each category will be honored due to the alternating site of the meet, as well as a result of the cancellation of the 2020 meet due to COVID-19.  The 50-year teams to be honored this year will be the the 1970-1971-1972 teams and for the 25-year teams being honored are the 1995-1996-1997 teams.

BURNETT WAS BURNING -- Senior Davonte Burnett, a two-time outdoor All-American in 2021, opened his 2022 outdoor season by winning the 100m dash at the Mt. SAC Relays with a PR of 9.99 (+0.3).  His time moved him to tied for second on USC's all-time list and currently ranks tied for fourth in the world.  Burnett won the 2022 NCAA indoor 60m title and placed fifth in the 100m and sixth in the 200m at the 2021 NCAA Championships.

SEARS III EARNS PAC-12 M-FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK HONORS -- Earnest Sears III was named Pac-12 Men's Field Athlete of the Week for April 11-19 as he won the Invitational Elite men's high jump competition at the Mt. SAC Relays on April 16 with the second-leading clearance all-time by a Trojan and equaled the 2022 world-leading height. Sears III won the Invitational Elite men's high jump competition at the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays with a personal-best clearance of 7-6.50 (2.30m).  That clearance moved Sears III to second on USC's all-time outdoor high jump list, trailing only Jesse Williams who has the school record of 7-7.25 (2.32m) set in 2006.  The 7-6.50 mark is tied for the world-leading height and also ties him for fifth all-time by a Pac-12 athlete.  Finishing second in the competition at Mt. SAC was former two-time NCAA high jump champion Trey Culver.  

ACTION JACKSON -- USC junior jumper Jalyn Jackson has best wind-legal jumps this outdoor season of 51-7.00 (15.72m) in the triple jump and 25-0.75 (7.64m) in the long jump.  His triple jump ranks 26th in the country and his long jump ranks 20th in the country.  Jackson ranks third in both events among Pac-12 athletes in 2022.

THE WISE MAN OF THE PAC -- USC sophomore Dallas Wise ranks among the top Pac-12 jumpers in three events.  Wise ranks tied for fifth in the Pac-12 in the high jump at 6-10.75 2.10m), seventh in the triple jump at 48-10.25 (14.89) and 14th in the long jump at 23-2.75 (7.08m).  Wise transferred to USC after two years at Coastal Carolina. He earned a silver medal at the 2020 Paralympics (August 2021) in the T46/47 high jump and took fourth in the T46/47 long jump.

WHAT CAN BROWN DO FOR YOU? -- USC junior Janiah Brown has been a great addition for the USC track and field and cross country teams this season, following two seasons at Mt. SAC.  She returned to compete at Mt. SAC on April 15 and set her 800m PR of 2:06.04 which ranks 10th among Pac-12 runners and tops among the Trojans.  Earlier this season she set her 400m PR of 56.06 at the Stanford Invitational on April 1 and her 1500m PR of 4:32.42 to win at the Triton Invitational on April 9.

THE RECORD-SETTING 4x800M RELAY -- USC's women's 4x800m relay team of Janiah Brown, Gigi Maccagnini, Jemima Russell and Alyssa Brewer ran a school record of 8:38.89 at the Texas Relays on March 26.  Brewer had an anchor leg time of 2:06.02.  The previous record for USC was 8:45.24 set in 1987 by Michelle Taylor, Julie Seleine, Elise Lyon and Lesley Noll.  All four of USC's runners currently rank within the top 25 among Pac-12 800m runners: Brown is 10th (2:06.04), Maccagnini is 13th (2:06.79), Brewer is 18th (2:07.80) and Russell is 25th (2:09.27).

NEXT MEET: USC-UCLA DUAL MEET -- USC will next be in action hosting UCLA in the annual Dual Meet.  The bulk of the meet will be at Loker Stadium on May 1 beginning at 11 a.m., while the hammer throw will be contested on April 30 at the South Bay Throws Facility located in Wilmington, Calif. beginning at noon.
