Arizona State and Stanford to meet for Pac-12 Women's Tennis Championship

Apr 22, 2022

Ojai, Calif. - One familiar championship participant and one newcomer will meet in the Pac-12 Women's Tennis Championship final at Libbey Park on Saturday. No. 3 seed Stanford and No. 5 seed Arizona State advanced through Friday's semifinals at the Ojai Valley Athletic Club and will meet for the Pac-12 title and the league's automatic NCAA Championship bid on Saturday at noon PT in Libbey Park.

For the Cardinal, it will be its fourth championship appearance in five years. Stanford won it all in 2017, 2018 and 2019. At No. 5, the Sun Devils are the lowest to ever reach the final at the tournament that begin in 2017.

For the second consecutive day, the Sun Devils pulled out a win the tough way – by having to take four of six singles matches after dropping the doubles point. To make matters trickier, the Golden Bears took four of six first sets, paving the way for the Sun Devils' comeback. Marianna Argyrokastriti was the hero, sliding past Cal's Hannah Viller Moeller in three sets (2-6, 6-1, 6-4) to break a 3-3 tie on court No. 6 and seal a historic Sun Devil win.

Giulia Morlet and Patricija Spaka helped the Sun Devils grab their first lead, 2-1, after the two pulled out individual wins on court Nos. 1 and 5. The Golden Bears picked up two quick points after winning court Nos. 3 and 4 to tie the match (3-3) and make Argyrokastriti and Viller Moeller's court the decider.

Stanford rallied after dropping the doubles point to win four straight in singles and upend UCLA, 4-1. Typical of a tight match, the two squads evenly split first set results in singles, with the Cardinal earning victories on courts three, five and six.

After falling behind 2-0 in the first set, Sara Choy rallied for six straight wins and carried that momentum forward for a 6-2, 6-2 victory on court six, Stanford's first point. Alexandra Yepifanova quickly turned the tables in her match after losing the first set 3-6, responding with 6-2 and 6-3 results to claim the victory on court two to push her win streak to eight matches. Angelica Blake had to fight for every point on court three, grinding out a 7-5, 6-4 victory to put Stanford just one win away. Connie Ma and India Houghton each forced third sets in their matches after early deficits, but it was Valencia Xu on court five to provide the clincher, forcing a second-set tiebreak and winning it 7-5 for the victory.

It was the third time this season Stanford has lost the doubles point but won the match, also doing so against Arkansas and No. 5 Texas. The win was Stanford's first against UCLA since 2019, breaking a three match losing streak.
