BSAA, Field and Maistrenko Recipients of 2022 President's Awards

Apr 22, 2022

PULLMAN, Wash.— Washington State rowing student-athletes Cate Field and Kateryna Maistrenko and the WSU Black Student-Athlete Association were named recipients of the 2022 President's Award by WSU President Kirk Schulz at the WSU Leadership and Engagement Awards of Distinction Tuesday, April 19.

The President's Awards honor those who advance leadership and engagement at WSU and beyond. Recipients of the award demonstrate exceptional leadership and service to students, WSU, and our community.

"It was a really nice event put on by the university to honor these students," said WSU Rowing Head Coach Jane LaRiviere. "It was an honor to see Cate, Kate, and the BSAA be recognized for all they have accomplished."

Founded by WSU student-athletes, the BSAA empowers student-athletes to use their voice, speak out about racial injustice, and educate others. Their efforts have led to the increased discussion surrounding racial and social issues in the athletic department amongst student-athletes and staff. This in turn empowered the BSAA students to gain confidence in leading groups in discussion on these topics. Because of their passion and hard work, the BSAA is often consulted on various athletic department policies and procedures, leading to real change.

Field, a junior from Burke, Virginia who is a kinesiology major, and Maistrenko, a senior from Kyiv, Ukraine who is double majoring in Economic Sciences and International Business, have each played a huge role in the success of the WSU women's rowing program since their arrival. The pair of rowers helped Washington State make its 14th appearance in the NCAA Rowing Championships program history.

Both Field and Maistrenko are CRCA Scholar Student-Athletes and have been named to the Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll. Maistrenko is also a member of WSU's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and is one of Washington State's two Pac-12 SALT Representatives.
