No. 3 UCLA Advances to MPSF Semifinals

LOS ANGELES -- No. 3 UCLA (23-3, 4-2 MPSF) advanced to the MPSF Semifinals with a 16-6 win over No. 15 Indiana (14-15, 1-5 MPSF) on Friday afternoon at Uytengsu Aquatics Center. The Bruins improved to 18-0 all-time against the Hoosiers.

The Bruins were led by redshirt senior and 2022 MPSF Player of the Year Maddie Musselman, who scored a game-high five goals. Senior Val Ayala and freshman Emma Lineback each contributed hat tricks for the Bruins.

Redshirt junior goalkeeper Georgia Phillips returned to the Bruin lineup and went the distance, registering 14 saves while surrendering six goals.

Tina Doherty led the Hoosiers with a hat trick while Mary Askew tallied 13 stops while allowing 16 goals.

PERIOD ONE
> UCLA outscored Indiana 3-2 in the opening period.
> Lanna Debow put Indiana up 1-0 when she converted a penalty shot (7:16).
> Musselman tied the game at 1-1 with a strike from the front court (6:56).
> Kallie White put the Hoosiers back in front (6:26) with a goal from the front court.
> Musselman scored her second on a penalty shot (2:08) to tie it at 2-2.
> Musselman completed her hat trick with a cross-cage heater (1:13) to give the Bruins their first lead of the game.
 
PERIOD TWO
> UCLA won the second period, 4-3.
> Val Ayala opened the scoring in the second period with a power play (7:39).
> Tina Doherty scored back-to-back goals for Indiana (7:16 and 5:00) to tie the game at 4-4.
> Ayala would strike again from five meters to put the Bruins back in front (4:39).
> Ayala completed her hat trick with a power play goal (3:32) to push the lead to 6-4.
> After a goal by Indiana, Musselman added her fourth goal of the game on a penalty shot (0:12) to push the lead to 7-5.
> UCLA led 7-5 at the break.
 
PERIOD THREE
> The Bruins outscored the Hoosiers, 3-1, in the third period.
> Musselman opened the scoring in third with her fifth goal (5:52) to extend the lead to 8-5.
> Emma Lineback scored a power play goal (2:33) to put UCLA up 9-5.
> Ava Johnson scored from two meters to make it four straight goals for UCLA (1:59).
> Debow scored her second for IU to end the scoring in the third (0:49) with the Bruins leading 10-6.

PERIOD FOUR
> The Bruins outscored the Hoosiers 2-1, in the fourth period to provide the 9-7 final score.
> Lineback opened the scoring with back-to-back goals (7:28 and 6:01) to complete her hat trick and increase the lead to 12-6.
> Anneliese Miller scored off a feed from Brooke Doten (4:23) to push the lead to 13-6.
> Nicole Struss scored back-to-back goals (2:23 and 1:43) to make 15-6.
> Miller added her second goal of the game (0:24) when she converted a penalty shot to end the scoring at 16-6.

The Bruins will take on No. 2 Stanford in the MPSF Semifinals on Saturday, Apr. 23 at 12:45 p.m. PT at USC's Uytengsu Aquatics Center.
