Oregon Drops Regular Season Finale at Colorado
BOULDER, Colo. – Colorado overpowered Oregon on the draw and used its advantage in possessions to win 23-12 Friday night at Kittredge Field.
The Buffaloes (10-5, 5-5 Pac-12) built a sizable halftime lead thanks to winning 17 of 23 draw controls in the first 30 minutes. The Ducks (3-13, 1-9) rebounded in the second half, picking up seven draws in 15 opportunities, but it was not enough to mount a comeback on the road.
How it Happened: Oregon hung with Colorado early in the game, answering 2-0 and 3-1 leads with goals from Shonly Wallace and Morgan McCarthy. Mara Zajac forced a key turnover that led to the second goal, poking the ball out of an attacker's stick to give the Ducks a transition opportunity.
The Buffaloes took control of the game shortly after the second goal, reeling off five goals in a row before McCarthy scored her second goal of the game with 17 seconds left in the first quarter. Oregon's Colorado natives combined for another score, with Lauren Rismani finding Katie Collins to get the Ducks within four.
CU had another run in store, however, outscoring Oregon 7-1 over the next nine minutes before Hanna Hilcoff scored and assisted on back-to-back goals to end the half. Colorado led Oregon 15-7 at the break.
Though they were down, the Ducks continued to battle after halftime, countering two early Colorado goals with two of their own. Alyssa Wright scored two goals - her ninth and 10th of the season - after the break, keeping the Ducks within striking distance for much of the third quarter. Wallace also completed her hat trick, the 10th of her career and fourth in the last six games.
Up Next: The Ducks return to the field on May 4 for the first round of the Pac-12 Tournament in Tempe, Ariz. All tournament games will be televised on Pac-12 Networks.
