Cal Falls To Two Top-10 Opponents

STANFORD, CALIFORNIA No. 11 California beach volleyball fell to two top-eight teams on Saturday at the Stanford Beach Volleyball Courts. The Bears lost to No. 7 Grand Canyon, 4-1. in the opener and fell to No. 8 Stanford, 3-2, in the second half of the doubleheader.

The Bears secured the first point of the dual vs. No. 7 Grand Canyon, but GCU won the next four points to claim a hard-fought win. Cal had to withdraw on court three while leading the matchup.
Maya Gessner and Ana Costa won a back-and-forth first set on court two, 21-19. The second set was a match of runs as Gessner and Costa fell behind 16-12, but fought back with a 5-1 run to even the match at 17. They would continue that spurt to go on to win 21-19, ending the match on a 9-3 run to claim the point.
The Bears took the first set on court four as Ashley Delgado and Brooke Buchner won 23-21. In the second set, the two teams traded blows as neither team could gain much separation. Grand Canyon led 15-14, but then went on a decisive 6-3 run to take the second set. The Lopes' pair went on to win the third set, 15-9, to even the match at one.
In the second wave, Grand Canyon secured a straight set win on court five as Dana Roskic and Cami Sanchez won 21-14, 21-18 to give the Lopes a 2-1 lead in the dual. Ainsley Radell and Ava Mann battled on court one, but lost the first set 21-18. In the second set, GCU jumped out to a 6-2 lead and was able to withstand a push to keep that margin for most of the match and win, 21-16.
Court three was the final match to start, but Lexi McKeown and Ella Dreibholz started strongly as they won the first set, 21-17. In the second set, GCU led 6-5 when McKeown suffered an injury. The Bears had to withdraw from the match giving GCU their fourth point.

The Bears won twice in the second flight, but ultimately fell to No. 8 Stanford in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader.
Stanford earned the win on court two, winning a back-and-forth first set 24-22, the Bears were able to fight off two set points before Stanford claimed the win. The Cardinal won the second set 21-15 to take the first point of the afternoon.
Cal jumped out in front, winning the first set on court four 21-16. However, Stanford won the second set 21-8. The Cardinal led 4-3 in the third set, but went on a 6-1 run to break it open as they won the third set, 15-7.          
The Bears earned a point back on court five as Alex Young-Gomez and Natalie Martin dominated on their way to a straight set victory. They picked up the win on the first set 21-17 before doing even better in the second set, winning 21-14.
Stanford clinched the match on court one with a 21-17, 21-14 victory. However, the Bears picked up a second point on court three. After leaving the earlier match due to injury McKeown stepped back into the lineup with Dreibholz and the duo won 21-18, 21-17.

The Bears will be back in action tomorrow for the final two matches of the regular season. Cal will take on Saint Mary's (CA) at 11 a.m. followed by a 3 p.m. matchup against Washington at the Stanford Beach Volleyball Courts.
